Description: Mr and Mrs Thomas Roots and their twelve children in front of their home at Springvale, Wanganui, in the 1870s. Photograph taken by William James Harding. "Thomas Roots arrived in Wanganui in 1857 and was employed as the County foreman. The house began as a two room cottage and was enlarged at various times to accommodate an expanding family. Dormer windows allow light into the upper bedrooms. The verandah is decorated with a "union jack" balustrade and fretwork brackets and frieze. To protect the small children a gate secures the porch." The body of water in the left background is Lake Huroa. Standing in the foreground is the resident magistrate, Samuel Deighton. Photograph taken in March 1877 by Alfred Martin of Christchurch. (Scene identified by George Hough, 9 May 2000). Samuel Deighton was identified from a copy of an original print from this negative at PAColl-3957-1. Alfred Martin visited the Chatham Islands in March 1877. Photograph taken circa 1860s by William James Harding. "The corrugated-iron sheets on the roof of the verandah are alternately painted red and white, and are supported by decorative wooden posts.
