Description: Album of photographs, probably taken by George William Barltrop, chiefly taken on a tour around the South Island. The first images relate to an area around Wellington, including Waiwhetu and Wainuiomata, including scenes of the Wainuiomata Reservoir. Two photographs taken in a park show three women wearing hats, full-length outfits, and carrying umbrellas, the "McNabs". One photograph shows a group of men and women, members of a camera club. The tour aound the South Island travels from Sheffield, down to the Otira Gorge, up to Lake Brunner and Inangahua, past Murchison, through Longford. In Wellington Harbour the steamship Ophir is sailing out, with people standing on the wharf in the foreground. Also in Wellington, is a large group portrait of men associated with the Missions to Seamen, gathered together on Labour Day 1901. Five photographs are taken around Otaki, one a pastoral scene, and two of three young Maori people (a young woman and a young girl in two scenes, with a second young girl in the third scene); a water mill; and a group of four people having a picnic in a field (two women (one obscured) and a young boy on the left, and a man with a bandaged hand on the right). The last few scenes are again of the South Island, at Temuka, Otago Harbour, Dunedin (including the Octagon), and a tram belonging to the Roslyn Tramway Company with a group of men on the front cab, and three standing in front. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides was probably taken earlier than those on some of the preceding sheets (information from his diary). This sheet contains images of Wellington, including Wellington Airport; views from Mount Victoria; around the Wellington coast including shore with marram grass and black-backed gulls; the Petone Settlers' Memorial; Marine Parade around Miramar, with the Monowai sailing through Wellington Heads; buildings in the city including Parliament Buildings, Government Buildings, Wakefield House at 90 The Terrace, used by the Founders Club; and an old two-storeyed wooden house on the Terrace; the Corinthic loading various goods at Wellington Wharves; Lambton Quay; Cable Car terminal and views of Wellington; and the Carter Observatory. Slides on this sheet are numbered 505-528, with a gap for no. 506. Arrangement: Image no. 506 (showing the view from Mount Victoria in Wellington) was taken as part of Williams' representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. Description: Album of photographs of early Wellington, circa 1880s to 1900s. One view shows the wreck of the "Oliver Lang" at Kaiwharawhara. Other views of the harbour show sailing ships, the SS Doric at Queens Wharf, the arrival of the RMS Aorangi, the small ship Manawatu in port, and the Cobar ferry. Away from the inner city and harbour there are three views of native bush with a stream running through, and one of the house under construction. The album is not full, with photographs only found on pages 8-15, and 19-21. The view of the Union Bank of Australia on the corner of Featherston Street and Lambton Quay shows Johnny Martin's fountain in the foreground. There are several views of inner Wellington, some from Bolton Street, with others showing Government House and Offices. The Chief Post Office is seen behind the wharf where the ship Manawatu is moored (p 14) This is the first of two albums which may have been given to the Misses Yamerton as birthday gifts at the same time, both having the same birthday greeting card, and both having a similar collection of photographs, though not all are the same. Description: View of the Kelburn cable car from the Clifton Terrace stop. The view looks down towards the tunnel which leads under The Terrace to the city terminal. A cable car is on the track, and the view includes houses and fenced off access from The Terrace. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer on the 30th of October 1936. Access from The Terrace to the Clifton Terrace stop had been closed off by the Kelburn Tramway Company in about 1931. This photograph was taken when the access was in the process of being rienstated as a result of successful negociations on the matter between the City Council and the Kelburn Tramway Company.
