Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Southland Regions, by unidentified photographers. All the locations are well identified. Some of the images are related to railways, including railway tunnels (e.g. The Caversham Tunnel when under construction circa 1909), and the Hunts Road Tunnel; the Clutha Railway Bridge; the Wingatui Signal Box; the Balclutha Railway Station, railway yards, and sales-yards; railway barns; D-class engine (New Zealand Railways steam-engine No. 355); the Owaka Express; and bush tramway tracks, one sawmill typical of small mills in the Catlins area. Many of the images are taken with an emphasis on atmosphere, including sunsets, stormy days on the coast near Dunedin, evening at Ocean Beach, storm clouds at Lawyer's Head, and "By beach and sand-hill". Description: Photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1915 and 1916. Many of the images show various aspects of logging in Piha and Karekare. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand in 1959. This sheet of slides was probably taken earlier than those on some of the preceding sheets (information from his diary). This sheet contains images of Wellington, including Wellington Airport; views from Mount Victoria; around the Wellington coast including shore with marram grass and black-backed gulls; the Petone Settlers' Memorial; Marine Parade around Miramar, with the Monowai sailing through Wellington Heads; buildings in the city including Parliament Buildings, Government Buildings, Wakefield House at 90 The Terrace, used by the Founders Club; and an old two-storeyed wooden house on the Terrace; the Corinthic loading various goods at Wellington Wharves; Lambton Quay; Cable Car terminal and views of Wellington; and the Carter Observatory. Slides on this sheet are numbered 505-528, with a gap for no. 506. Arrangement: Image no. 506 (showing the view from Mount Victoria in Wellington) was taken as part of Williams' representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England. Description: Photographs collected by Mrs Esther Ecclesfield for her daughter Esma Ecclesfield (i.e. Esther Mary Ecclesfield, later known as Esther Mary North, or Esma North). None of the people shown are identified. Several images show camping and views of bays on Waiheke island. Many of the photographs were taken in the Napier area, including several of a woman and two young girls with bicycles standing outside a house in Seaview terrace, Napier, and an interior view of the house; yachts; the Napier Arcade, with the Arcadia Tea-Rooms; children at a Napier beach; and a horse-drawn carriage travelling through water along the foreshore to Cape Kidnappers. Page 4 shows the original Otatara (Ashridge) homestead. Various views around Wellington include Lower Hutt, Belmont Road, Wilton's Bush, Breaker Bay, Muritai and Titahi Bay. In the South Island most of the views were taken around Dunedin, showing Tomahawk Beach, Lawyer's Head and "Cargill's Gates" at St. Clair. Inscriptions: Album page - `Esma. With love from Mother. The rest of the collection includes: a street scene in front of the old railway station; a cycling race; men rowing and canoeing; children playing in a swing park; a brass band playing on board a steamer; various beach scenes including donkey rides; train pulling into Kaiapoi station; a small bach; two girls next to a waterfall; trams and a cyclist going past the Jubliee Clock Tower; the front facade of St Paul's Presbyterian Church; three views of the old Public Hospital next to Hagley Park; the Chamber of Commerce building on the corner of Oxford Terrace and Worcester Street; a copy negative of a carte de visite of a couple kissing; a monument incorporating a tiki on a tall pole and other maori carvings (location unknown); a man at the doorway of his shed with an array of gardening implements; two men pulling a covering back from a hangi pit; the cathedral with a number of trams in front; a tram advertising Ballantynes; a kitchen interior showing a range with kettles on top and a cupboard and dresser with crockery; six Maori on horseback possibly in a procession; a porter bringing a cart of luggage up to a train; five men giving friends piggy backs on the beach; sheep being driven past stock yards; the Avon River; a crowd outside the Avon Rowing Club; Wilson the maltman's horse and cart crossing a bridge; and two images of a harvest festival in a hall with a painted back drop and sheaves of corn arranged in front of it. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams'). The first slide shows the house at 48 Hume Street, Crows Nest, Sydney owned by friends of Mr Williams. The next group are taken from a published guide to the Tarawera eruption, some showing the area before the eruption and one of the effects after the eruption. The following slides show scenes on the West Coast and Canterbury. Many relate to geological and rock formations, including Punakaiki pancake rocks, a sample of orbicular granite at Karamea and a high terrace at Karamea, rocks in the sea at Scotts Bay, cliffs on the Rakaia River, and moraine at Franz Josef Glacier. There are also images of white rata, cows heading to milking and on pasture, and a butter factory in Christchurch. The last two images were taken by Neville Hatwell, one of the Tasman Glacier from the air, and one of the road over the Crown range. Slides on this sheet are numbered 746-897, with nos. 756 to 825 (all on Australia) removed for a lecture series which Mr Williams gave when he returned to England. Those removed are filed in a later sequence. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 898-899, 901, 903, 905, and 921-922) to create representative collections on New Zealand and Australia which he used in lecture series on his return to England. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. This sheet shows a sheep drover on horseback with a pack horse and two dogs herding a flock of sheep near Gisborne; a woman sitting on a tree stump overlooking Lake Taupo and the mountains; fumarole vents near Lake Taupo; the Chateau Tongariro on Mount Ruapehu; a man standing beside the Crater Lake on Ruapehu; Mount Ngauruhoe; a garden in New Plymouth; a distant view of the house "Tupare" near new Plymouth; Mount Egmont; views on the road to Tokaora; railway line running through the centre of Palmerston North; the Manawatu Gorge; a street in Masterton; the Wairarapa plains and sheep farms; a stand of cabbage trees; dry riverbed of the Putangirua River en route to the Putangirua Pinnacles, and a view of the Pinnacles. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
