Description: Photographs of New Zealand taken circa 1880s by various photographers including James Bragge and Josiah Martin. Photographs of the Manawatu Gorge were taken by James Bragge, some of which show the horse and carriage in which Bragge carried his equipment. There is one photograph of English explorer and adventurer Captain Speedy who spent many years in Abyssinia and other parts of Africa, and who came to New Zealand in 1864, where he fought with the Waikato Militia before returning overseas. He is shown wearing Abyssinian costume (p 15). Description: A collection of photographs of the Hunter family particularly of George Ernest Hunter and his wife and dogs at their home in Watt Street, Wadestown but also of his brother Robert Henry Hunter (the two men look very alike). They include a number of photographs of their house, garden and neighbourhood but also a postcard of Paekakariki beach, a postcard of two wagons with passengers passing through the Devil's Elbow between Buttermere and Keswick in the English Lake District, seven men with penny-farthing bicycles ca 1880, a carte de visite of four young Maori wearing kakahu taken by Swan & Wrigglesworth, and a photograph of a sketch of Porerua Bay near Wanganui (mid 19th century). The collection includes a letter to a Mr Ellingham from I W Macdonald of 8 Lower Watt Street, Wadestown offering him the photographs. Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1912 and 1914. Images include Godber's family, a few of identified people (names listed in the name file), and many with no identification. One image of a group of fitters and turners apprentices at the Petone Railway Workshops, taken in 1913, has all the apprentices named (listed in the full record for Godber negative, APG-0457-1/2) Views of the old Central Fire Station at Petone, and the new Petone Fire Brigade Station; the aftermath of a huge fire at Cooks' Cooperage (on January 14, 1914); and a locomotive which had rolled. Local Petone scenes include the Petone Council Chambers and town clock, and a number of houses in the area, including the home of Godber's friend Tom Mather; Korokoro bush, and the Korokoro Reservoir. Away from the Wellington area, Godber photographed a number of houses in Clonbern Road area; the Makatote Viaduct and the Manganui-o-te-Ao Viaduct.
