Description: Shows a bush clearing with tall trees at left and right, beside a thatched cottage whose roof extends on the left side almost to the ground. There is a slab chiney on the near side, and to the right a woman stands beside a barrel. There is another low thatched hut at the left. In the left foreground lies a tree trunk. There is a solitary tree fern behind the house. Louis E Ward's "Early Wellington" (1928) notes on page 300, that a Mr Russell (spelt with a double l) was living at Taita in 1852 (quotes the 'Australian and New Zealand gazette' for 12 June 1852).
