Description: Volume contains handwritten recipes compiled by Mrs Beard and written down in her journal. Includes recipes for ratafia biscuits, royal pudding, French honey, scrambled eggs, lemon sponge, lemonade, tapioca cream, arrowroot pudding, peach jelly, raspberry vinegar, Turkish delight, dainty cakes, hop beer, tomato sauce, fig jams, hunter's beef broth, chutney and pie melon jam. Also recipes for traditional medicines including cough mixture and gargle for sore throats. Instructions for making saddle polish and a newspaper cutting of handy household hints. The remainder of the journal includes notes on the height and weight of family members, address lists and an epitaph from the Bible "Here lies an old woman who always was tired..." Description: Stevenson wrote her account in 1987 and begins by describing her family and their situation from when she was born in Pahiatua in 1920 until the 1950s when her marriage ended. She describes the daily life and routines of the family, the various moves they made - to Wellsford, Hamilton, back to Pahiatua, Ongarue, Makokomiko and Wellington - the work her father did which included selling books for the Seventh-Day Adventists and being a farm manager - and of life at the various schools she and her sisters attended. She describes working in Wellington at the Sanitarium Health Food vegetarian cafe, her marriage to Bob Woods, various events in their family life and their subsequent separation when she began working at the Odeon picture theatre in Auckland. She also discusses the role of religion in a person's upbringing. Stevenson and her husband narrowly missed being on the Tangiwai train and she elaborates on this. Description: Contains diary entries by Keys re his travels through the Bay of Plenty and Horowhenua districts on business as a Native Land Agent; there are detailed descriptions of the countryside and towns which Keys travelled through, and discussions about the people he met; there are also discussions about Maori practices and customs that he encountered and his impressions of them. There are also notes about native flora and fauna and the liquor trade, and a number of photographs of people (mainly from Te Arawa and Ngati Raukawa), scenery and marae, taken by Keys according to the text (each is dated). Also contains copies of various manuscripts (in Maori) submitted to Keys by Maori informants, and information about the history of Rangiatea at Otaki Also includes stories, written in Maori, from the Ngati Raukawa tribe; "The story of Uenuku-kopako and Kapu- Manawawhiti"; "The death of Tukemata"; and a copy of a letter from Riapo Puhipi (Leopold Busby) about an exchange of gifts between Te Rauparaha and Poroa, a chief of Ahipara. Includes photographs of the old Otaki school house; Kahurangi Taipua; Raukawa meeting house (all on p.73), and Tungia Te Ao (pp.74 & 100).
