Description: Photographs relating to St John's Presbyterian Church in Wellington. They include views of St Paul's Presbyterian Church in Christchurch in 1898 and in 1901 when there were combined encampments held in Christchurch, involving Young Men's Bible Classes of the two churches. Many of the photographers are identified (names listed above). One photograph shows Dr John Elmslie of St Paul's Church, standing at the pulpit which is decorated with flowers, with the word "Mizpah" picked out in white. Several images show Dixon Street houses above St John's Church (p 09), and "fallen houses" (p 25) Another group of images show triumphal arches celebrating the arrival in Wellington of the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall in 1901. Description: Consists of two maps drawn on separate linen and then glued together. The first map is a sketch of Riversdale, from Patanui Stream and the Homewood Main Road to Masterton, eastwards along the Whakaeanga Stream and the Motuwaireka Stream to the ocean at Riversdale Beach. Shows cadastral information for several numbered and part surveyed sections, including Pt 695-700, Pt 813, Pt 33, Pt 35-37, Pt 784. Shows a private road off the Homewood Main Road, leading to the Riversdale homestead beside the ocean. Includes comments on land description and quality; total land area is 2125 acres. The second map shows a sketch of a section of streets in Masterton, and names Dixon Street and Worksop Road. Other streets are sketched and unnamed, with some properties outlined. Description: View possibly from upper Dixon Street or McDonald Crescent, looking across Te Aro and up Willis Street towards Mount Victoria. St Peter's Church dominates the centre of the view and the Gasworks can be seen immediately to the left of the steeple of the church. Marjoribanks Street shows up clearly rising up Mount Victoria, and Oriental Bay, the entrance to Evans Bay and Miramar Peninsula are also clearly visible. Bush in the foreground, shops along Willis Street and several houses. In the right foreground is a large house with two steep gables, and a tree-filled garden, including two young Norfolk Pines. Note to A.H. Turnbull on corner. Description: Shows wooden church with high roofed aisle, clerestory windows, flanked by side aisles. [West?] entrance door is under wooden spire. To the right is the wooden church hall. Both are seen behind wooden fence beyond road in foreground. At left a man on horseback rides along road towards left distance. A man and woman with parasol stand in left foregrround, and a woman and child stand outside the church fence on the opposite side of the road. See earlier correspondence about the disposal of this painting. AT 10/14, 22 December 1994. Inscription below painting (valid 1990s?): A C. Aubrey ink & watercolour study of the first St Matthew's Church and hall situated in the church acre, corner of Church and Dixon Streets, Masterton, at the turn of the 20th century. The church was demolished about 1914, but the hall was shifted to the present site, & is used by youth groups, behind the present parish hall, Church Street, Masterton.
