Levin, William Hort, 1845-1893 :[Port Nelson with Arrow Rock]. 1867.

Date: 1867

By: Levin, William Hort, 1845-1893; Heaphy, Charles, 1820-1881; Blanshard, Sue, active 2001; Dickie, J W H F (Mrs), active 1960s

Reference: A-351-018

Description: Shows a view looking into an inlet, with Arrow Rock on the right. There is a large house high on the cliff at the left, a jetty in the left foreground, a small rowboat in the centre foreground, and a red buoy at the right. The description on the backing board of the clifftop house as Mr Hoggard's is incorrect, as is the attribution to Heaphy. Both depended upon Wellington being the location of the scene depicted. Historian Ian Wards suggests that the house may be that of Major Mathew Richmond, who had a house in the area depicted. He was resident in Nelson from 1847 to his death in 1887 (Pers. comm. June 2001) Other Titles - Mr Hoggard's house on "The Cliff", by Major Heaphy Inscriptions: Recto - bottom right - W H L 1867; Backing board recto - centre - Mr Hoggard's house on "The Cliff" 1867, by Major Heaphy Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 94 x 134 mm (sight) Provenance: Previously purchased in Wellington in the 1960s by Mrs J W H F Dickie, Mrs Blanshard's mother. Offered for sale by Mrs Dickie at Christie's 16 April 1980, $199. Failed to reach reserve.

[Gold, Charles Emilius?], 1809-1871 :[Wellington Harbour. Between 1851 and 1858]

Date: 1851 - 1858

By: Gold, Charles Emilius, 1809-1871; Phillips, William Edward, active 1868

Reference: A-429-042

Description: Shows a view across the harbour towards the town buildings, with Plimmer's Ark noticeable on the foreshore, and the buildings of barracks on the more distant hill at the left. In the right foreground is a small jetty with a wooden hut or sentry box on the end of it, and wooden steps leading down to a moored rowing boat. In the left foreground a red canoe with a cargo possibly of fish or firewood is poled along by a seated tag-cloaked pipe-smoking figure, and a figure standing in a red cloak. The reflections of the canoe and the jetty and hut are clearly visible in the water in the foreground. Further away at the left are a yacht and a larger sailing ship seen end on. Attribution: Attributed to Gold on stylistic grounds, such as the reflections of the canoe and the awkwardness of the figures; see work by Gold at A-288-026. Another version of this watercolour, closely similar, is in Whanganui Museum, signed 'Dr Phillips pinxt'. The name Dr Phillips is not known as an artist resident in Wellington in the 1850s. One artist may have copied the other's work. William Edward Phillips registered as a medical practitioner in Nelson in 1867, but is not known to have been an artist Dating: Gold was based in Wellington between 1847 and 1858. 'Plimmer's Ark', the wrecked barque Inconstant, was moored at the junction of Lambton Quay and Willis Street from 1851 The sentry-box on the end of the wharf was located close to Government House, now the site of Parliament buildings, towards the north end of Lambton Quay Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Watercolour, 223 x 277 mm.

Artist unknown: [Nelson. 1890s]

Date: 1892 - 1899

Reference: A-468-012

Description: Shows Nelson Harbour, between Tahunanui and Nelson Haven, incorporating the newly-constructed sea wall. The foreshore and hills above are dotted with houses and other early buildings, and a jetty can be seen at the far end. A line of trees on the top of the closest hill stands out. The calm harbour water shows various small boats, including a rowboat with three men coming ashore in the foreground The road along the Nelson Haven foreshore was completed in 1899. Surveyor and engineer Sam Jackel was commissioned to construct a concrete seawall. The wall was built by prisoners from the Nelson Goal and completed in 1897. A chain fence was erected along part of the wall in 1898 to protect the public from the vertical drop into the sea below (which suggests this scene was painted before 1898) Quantity: 1 oil(s). Physical Description: Oil on board, 215 x 310 mm
