Description: The diary of Rifleman C M Kirkland describes training at Rangiotu, near Wanganui, embarkation, battles and trench warfare around Armentieres, his injury, recovery in England at Brockenhurst Hospital and return to New Zealand. The entries are disjointed but give a vivid account of the fighting and the experience of being under bombardment in the frontline trenches. Handwritten label of front cover of diary reads "Dad's diary written during the 1st World War. He was a patient in Brockenhurst Hospital". Three pages, dealing with his training at Rangiotu, were torn, presumably by Kirkland, from the body of the diary and have been placed in the envelope inside the front cover. Source of title - Supplied by Library Other - The donor requests a transcript if the diary is deciphered and transcribed. Description: Comprises journal kept by Stuart from 1863-1866 while he was travelling on the continent through Paris, Nice and Geneva, then his embarkation on the `Sea King' at Gravesend (Nov 1863) and coaling at St Vincent. He describes the entertainments on board, the weather, storms, death of a child born on board, arrival at Auckland (27 Jan 1864), meeting the 4th Company which had come from India, his journey to Otahuka and his first impressions. He writes of escorting carts and other military duties, painting views, problems of paying the men, Maori prisoners, in camp at Koheroa, of the engineers making a road, cutting firewood, seeing Tauranga, Te Puke, Wheranghi, fighting, arrival at Wairoa, orders received from Major Shuttleworth, visiting Te Papa, social activities in Auckland, Christmas (1864) and ends at Te Papa on 10 Jan 1865. From Timaru, Rule records travelling to the North Island, daily life at the Featherston Military Camp which includes details of parades, inspections and drills. Rule notes his personal correspondence, family birthdays and incidental financial payments. Also includes newspaper cuttings relating to the Great War and the Influenza Epidemic of 1918-1919. Description: Diary kept by Bayne while serving as a private in the Ruahine Company, Wellington Infantry Battalion, in Egypt and Gallipoli. The first pages comprise a listing of the officers in Malone's Wellington Infantry Battalion and a timeline of significant dates relating to the start of the First World War. Diary begins on 10 Aug 1914 as Bayne enlists at Dannevirke, is sent to Masterton for equipment and then onto the Awapuni Camp for military training. Further training at Trentham Camp then embarks aboard the `Arawa' to Egypt on 16 Oct 1914. Details shipboard life and gives accounts of the stopovers en-route, included a detailed account of the layover in Colombo. Arrives Alexandria 3 Dec 1914 and gives detailed account of the surrounding buildings, foods and local customs. Continues training at Zeitoun Camp until deployment to the Suez Canal on 25 Jan 1915. Returns to camp and describes living conditions, military life and operations. Diary entry for the "Battle of the Wozzer", 2 Apr 1915. Leaves Alexandria on 10 Apr 1914 aboard the transport `Itonus' for Gallipoli. 25 Apr 1915 is transhipped at 10.30pm to `HMS Bulldog' and taken half a mile from the beach before loading into rowing boats for the remainder of the ANZAC landing. Gives detailed narrative of the fighting and lists soldiers injured in the conflict. Comments on the failed attack on Monash Gully 2 May 1915, leaves Anzac Cove to fight at Cape Helles 6 May 1915. Diary ends 8 May 1915 with Bayne's involvement in preparing for the attack on Krithia. Also includes newspaper report of a memorial service held at Manakau for Bayne, and a newspaper cutting photograph of Private Bayne and New Zealanders on their way to Gaba Tepe. The newspaper cutting that accompanies this diary indicates that this diary was found on Bayne's body five months after his death. Source of title - Supplied Private Bayne fought with the Ruahine Company, Wellington Infantry Battalion, in Gallipoli in 1915. Reported missing in action at Cape Helles, 8 May 1915. Description: Vigors went to Australia with the 11th Regiment of Foot, in 1846. The diary records a voyage to Auckland, Whangaroa, New Hebrides, Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji, with detailed descriptions of places and peoples visited. The manuscript includes illustrative work by Vigors in ink, pencil and watercolour, of land and geographical features, activities and artifacts of Maori life and culture, and of the culture of the various Pacific peoples he encountered and named portraits of persons encountered; annotated paper from New South Wales Parliament re the Botanic Gardens, Sydney; clippings; and letter in French. The `Havannah' was commanded by Captain Erskine A listing of the holdings of the Public Record Office of Ireland relating to Philip Vigors is located in the back file for this collection Source of title - Title page Relationship complexity - Glass plate negatives of illustrations within the volume are held in the Photographic Archve collection (PAColl-6719). These appear to have been taken for inclusion in the 1924 typescript transcript of the journal (qMS-2082-2084).
