Description: Copy of a topographic map of the area in the Murimotu District from the Kaiiwi River and the Ohura River across to Lake Taupo, the Kaimanawa Ranges and the Rangitikei River. Cut road lines, proposed lines and native tracks are referred to in a reference key. Some tracks are routes proposed by Mr. Hogg and Mr. Booth, also an old war track described by natives is marked. Plantations, mountain peaks, rivers and streams are named. Relief features are described. Major Marshall's and Birch's Station are marked. Handwritten note on bottom right of map: The lake and mountains are from Hochstetter's map corrected by the Auckland Trig Survey: the Wanganui River from Brewer's survey, and the Upper Turakina and Rangitikei from Swainson's map corrected by Monro's survey. Description: Ink and pencil annotations on partly hand coloured map (incomplete - only part blue colour and some red for proposed roads). The pencil annotations add crosses (population) and accidental orange brush stroke indicate draft copy. Map is hand coloured to a key that reads: 'Lines of road proposed to be made - red. Local position of Military settlements - red circles. Lines of road to be made at a future period - brown. The crosses (black) represent the distribution of the Native Population approximately each cross representing about 100 souls.' The military settlements are most dense in the Wanganui, South Taranaki, New Plymouth, Waipa, Waikato and South Waikato districts and north of the Manawatu River. No such settlements are identified around Wellington, Auckland, Napier or the East Coast north of Mahia. Quantity: 1 map(s). Description: Elevated view looking down over the township of Port Chalmers and across the Otago Harbour to Quarantine Island, Goat Island (with single men's quarantine barracks visible) and beyond to the Otago Peninsula (Mt Charles on left and Harbour Cone on right). In the immediate foreground (on left) is the old cemetery. In the foreground there is a railway wagon and large stockpile of rocks waiting to be shifted. In foreground to the right is the cutting for the main Trunk Railway. Retail shops and commercial premises in George Street can be seen, including those of James Menelaus, James Bosworth Taylor (painter & paperhanger) & Simmonds & Sons. On the hill to the left in Grey Street is the Port Chalmers Grammar School and Holy Trinity Church (only partially visible). Photograph was taken by Herbert Deveril and dated ca 1876. The new Port Chalmers Grammar School in the foreground (centre right partially obscured by trees) was built 1874-1875 and occupied from December 1875. The building in George Street on extreme left was not completed until March 1875. Alongside this building is a large excavation for buildings eg Marine Hotel completed in 1881. Description: Based on a published cadastral map with parishes of the Bay of Islands, hand-drawings show constructed roads which require maintenance or widening to avoid undue delays in delivery of goods when sea conditions are rough. Routes are marked as A to C - Okaihau to Waimate; A to D - Okaihau to Kerkeri; A to E - Okaihau to Haruru Falls; A to F - Okaihau to Kawakawa. Okaihau, Russell and Kawakawa are underlined in red and Ohaeawai, Waimate, Black Bridge and Opua are handwritten in red ink. An accompanying letter requests that this work be considered, includes estimates, and gives information about the colour coding of the roads. No reference key is given. Title supplied by cataloguer. Map and accompanying letter from the Dept. of Lands and Survey to the Waste Lands Committee, House of Representatives, both have 'Special Collections' inscribed in pencil. Quantity: 1 map(s). Description: Copies of two reports written by Russell. The first (5 pages) details the building of the Porirua Military Road (1846-1847) and the Horokiwi Road (1847-1849) by detachments of the 58th and 99th Regiments and mentions the contruction of stockades following the attack on Boulcott's Farm. The second report (12 pages), dated Pauatahanui, 31 Dec 1849, is extracted from Papers relative to New Zealand, volume 5, 1850. This is his official report on the building of the roads, sent to the Lieutenant-Governor. Source of title - Transcribed Russell came to New Zealand as the Captain of a detachment of the 58th Regiment, having seen service in New South Wales and became Superintendent of Roads in 1846. Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Chiefly photographs of the aftermath of the Tarawera eruption in 1886, many taken by Charles Spencer. Images include Dr Hector's party; views of mud-covered country; damage to buildings at the village of Te Wairoa; Henry Lundius and J C Blythe standing outside the hen-house in which several survivors took refuge; and views of the new lake formed after the eruption. Several views show the area before the eruption. The last two photographs in the album show the Manawatu Gorge bridge under construction, and the engine room at the Government Printing Office in Wellington. Description: Mounted photographs by the Burton Brothers of the junction of Eden and Tees Streets, Oamaru showing St Luke's Church, shops, tram lines and part of the Council Chambers; looking down on the wharves of Port Chalmers with the Presbyterian Church in the right foreground; and the Kakahi Falls, near Tawhata on the Whanganui River. Two smaller mounted photographs of a river in the Catlins District. Three pages from a photograph album holding five photographs of the building of the Arapuni Dam on the Waikato River including the buried forest exposed by the Waikato River diversion. Three loose prints by J W France of an early settlers' cottage made of ponga with a turf roof and with the family outside; a group of six workmen standing on the road they were building with long handled shovels and a boy and a dog in front of them; and the funeral procession of Sir John MacKenzie in 1901 led by a pipe band up the main road in Oamaru working.
