Description: View of the trenches at Gate Pa, Tauranga, looking east, the front of the pa to the left, the rear to the right, after its capture by British forces in April 1864. European soldiers standing guard, two carrying a stretcher in the background, a rifle and parts of the broken palisade lying in the foreground, and wounded and dead Maori men visible in the trenches, including Reweti, in a trench to the right, facing the viewer. A tunnel on the left is marked as a covered way, and a tall pole in the background, on a slant is the flagpole. A low land formation in the background to the left is noted as Maungatapu cliffs with cemetery. Tauranga Harbour can be seen in the background Very similar to A-033-009. Robley made many copies of this view Another such view in Cowan's New Zealand Wars has Robley's additional explanatory text around the outside (neg 10985 1/2). The section along the left, to the left of the trench and inside the palisade is a covered passage leading to rifle pits. The figure lying in the left trench is described as 'dead Maori on blanket'. The figure in the right-hand trench is described as 'bearded wounded Maori' and 'Sticks knocked from the palisade' and 'sticks of palisade scathed by shot', '68th sentry on the higher part of the Pa', as well as 'fallen flagstaff in rear' are noted. Description: Battle scene with groups of soldiers from the Forest Rangers and the 65th Regiment, plus General Cameron and staff, with guns firing and horses, several dead or wounded men, Maori whares in the background and bush and hills. Soldiers are identified by name and the death of General Nixon is shown. The man directing the Forest Rangers is likely to be von Tempsky. After an original by J.A.Wilson, a witness to the battle, and depicted in this view. A copy of the original and a description of the battle is published in Cowan, J. The New Zealand wars. Vol. 1 p. 345. Lieutenant McDonnell is likely to be Thomas McDonnell (1832-1899), noted for his heroism at Rangiaowhia. His brother, William McDonnell (1839-1919?) also fought in the New Zealand wars, but in the Wanganui area. Description: A six-panelled account of the deaths of 7 surveyors in Canterbury in the 1860s and 1885. They were Henry Whitcombe (mistakenly called George by the artist) who drowned while crossing the Teremakau River with Jacob Louper (correctly Lauper) in 1863; Carleton (correctly Charlton) Howitt and two others (Robert Little and Henry Miller) drowned in Lake Brunner in 1863, their packs found by the sole survivor, James Belgrave Hammett; Charles Townshend (correctly Townsend), drowned while crossing the Grey River in 1863; George Dobson, shot by the Maungatapu murderers in 1866; and Edward Lake Paske, who died in a snowstorm in the Clarence Valley in 1885 (correctly 1886), followed by another member of his party, Hugh Thompson who died in similar circumstances on the same trip. These illustrations were reproduced in New Zealand newspapers during the late 1940s and early 1950s. The newspapers included The Evening Post, Auckland Star, Christchurch Star Sun, Taranaki Herald, Southern Cross, Students' Digest, Greymouth Evening Star, Evening Star (Sports) Dunedin, and the Southland Daily News. The words First class can be distinguished on the side on one carriage, with Mount Cook on the side of the engine.
