Description: Shows one of the ships of the New Zealand Company's preliminary expedition (Tory or Cuba), a rowboat (or canoe) with two lateen sails in the right foreground, and a Maori canoe in the right middle distance. Shows coastline, partly wooded in background, with the Arthur Range to the right. The view is of the Waimea Plains and Moutere area. Description: View across the harbour entrance towards the hills including Palmer Head, with the Cuba in rough water cf Auckland Institute & Museum sketch PS 1 (8) 41, dated July 1839, with similar title: "Cuba" return from Chatham Island. Hurricane off Port Nicholson July 39'. The date should correctly be 1840 Dating: work was originally dated by the Library as 1839. However Heaphy returned from the Chatham Islands in July 1840.
