Description: River in the foreground, a broad field with cows grazing beyond, with trees, a church and other buildings in the background and hills in the distance. The title appears to be incorrect. There is no "All Saints Church" at Taita (or at Lower Hutt). The main church at Taita, Christ Church is much closer to the hill than the church shown here, there is no large house beside it, its spire is at the opposite end of the roof when viewed from the river and the distance from the river is too small. The view may be of Lower Hutt and a different church. The nearest All Saints Church was a Methodist one at Belmont. Shows the view from the hills at the southern end of the city, looking northward along the longer axis of the harbour, and was taken towards the close of a fine autumn day when the light of the setting sun was reflected on the distant masses of the Rimutaka and Tararua Ranges. The lower slopes of Brooklyn Hill are in the foreground, with the houses of Te Aro Flat in the middle ground, part of Mt Victoria on the right, ships in the harbour, Somes Island and Petone with the Tararua Ranges beyond in the distance. Description: View from the lower slopes between Brooklyn and Mount Cook, with cows, a herdsman and his dog on the road in the foreground. On the right lie the swamps of Te Aro, with Te Aro Pa visible along the foreshore, along with scattered houses. To the left of the pa area, the road passing diagonally across the plain is probably Cuba Street. The most prominent building on the foreshore is either the Maori or the Wesleyan Chapel in Manners St. The cliff at the water's edge to the left is Clay Point with Plimmer's Ark visible moored in the water at its base. On the far left in the plain area, the large church building is St Peter's, Willis St. Thorndon is in the background to the left, with Pipitea Point (now Thorndon Quay) and Kumutoto Spit (now Midland Park) both visible. The preliminary watercolour for this work is located at C-007-007 with title 'Te Aro and Thorndon, 1852'. It is dated 1852 and lacks the cows, herdsman and dog of C-007-0011, but shows more of the swamps of Te Aro, with Waitangi Creek meandering through them. The building details are less clear in the preliminary work. Reproduced as a Turnbull Library Print, 1975 as part of the Colonial Wellington Series. Description: Shows the railway station and ancillary buildings, including railway cottages, the goods shed and the engine shed. Also shown are St Joseph's Catholic Church, the Provincial Hotel, P A Wilkie's second store (to the right of the hotel), and, to its left, Edward Wilkie's bakery and boarding-house Supplied title. Reproduced in: Kenneally, J M Upper Hutt, Wellington. 1980 (q993.1. KEN) with the following text (p.6). "The artist ... is known to have stayed with station-owners and at hotels and is believed to have left paintings of the district in lieu of board. While staying at Upper Hutt around 1890 he gave two paintings to Francis Howard Wilkie. One is a view of Upper Hutt and the other shows two bridges at the entrance to the Akatarawa Valley. The paintings have since passed to Mr Wilkie's daughter and son-in-law, Mr & Mrs J. H. G. Patterson of Totara Park, Upper Hutt. [Both watercolours in the Turnbull Library from the 1980s]. Shown in the painting of Upper Hutt are railway cottages, station building, goods shed and the engine shed. Also St Joseph's Catholic Church and the Provincial Hotel. On the right of the hotel is P. A. Wilkie's second store built about 1875 when the Fortune Lane community moved north to Upper Hutt to be near the railway station. The building at the left of the Provincial Hotel is Edward Wilkie's bakery and boardinghouse. Other copies: A second, almost identical version of this view was offered at International Art Centre, Auckland, 19 March 2008, lot 26. It was passed in. The only differences between the two works were in small details like the appearance of the cows and in the small group of trees in the left foreground. Description: View from the south end of Oriental Bay looking north toward Wellington, showing rowing boat, boat-sheds, cows in field, houses, Oriental Parade and Oriental Terrace The large red house on the hill, upper left, was known as 'Thomas's Folly' and was built of Australian hardwood by Sir Godfrey John Thomas, half-brother to Sir George Grey, then later owned by Alfred Maurice Lewis of Thompson Lewis. The wood used for this house was said to have been left over from the Government Buildings in Lambton Quay. The large white house, also on the left, but lower, in Wilkinson Street (leading to Grass Street), was first owned by a Mr Wilkinson. The single-storey house on the corner of Hay Street was owned by a Mr Laurence Arcus. Painting has been trimmed. It shows the flat area of Te Aro with Te Aro Pa close to the shore and other buildings in the foreground. Plimmer's Ark is on the waterfront to the left just beyond the Clay Point cliff. The large church building on the left is St Peter's, Willis Street, and the large building on the waterfront is either the Maori or the Wesleyan Chapel in Manners St. Thorndon is in the background with Pipitea Point (now Thorndon Quay) and Kumutoto Spit (now Midland Park) both visible.
