Description: An album probably created, and chiefly photographed by George William Barltrop, between 1872 (one image of the laying of the foundation stone of (?) Provincial Buildings in 1872), and the rest being views of New Zealand taken in the late 1890s. One sequence of images shows St Thomas' Church (Newtown, Wellington) under construction, and both exterior and interior views when finished, in 1895. One image shows the wreck of the SS Wairarapa in 1894, and there are views of several lighthouses around New Zealand, two of which were taken by the Burton Brothers. A number of scenes are taken in the Nelson area, including several of the Dun Mountain railway (for the Dun Mountain Copper Mining Company), the Maitai River and valley, Nelson City, and Washington Valley. Description: Album of photographs taken between the 1860s and 1890s by various unidentified photographers, with one identified as being possibly by Daniel Louis Mundy, and one by James Bragge. Two early photographs, one of `Oakbourne Station', the home of John Davis Canning was taken circa 1860s, and one of `Orua Wharo' the home of John Johnston, and later his son Sydney Johnston, was taken circa 1870s, before the new house was built in 1879. Page 7 contains pressed ferns. Non-New Zealand photographs include several of Fiji, including Levuka, Taveuni, and an avenue of palms; one of the carving on Sir Joshua Reynold's bed at Tarrington; one of an Elizabethan glass cup; a carved overmantel; two views of Arundel House at Brighton, and one of Heston Church near Osterley Park. In the North Island, apart from the views of Oakbourne and Orua Wharo in the Hawke's Bay region, there are several views of the Pink and White Terraces, two showing the White Terraces both empty and full, Clay Island beneath the White Terraces; two views of the Manawatu Gorge and Seventy Mile Bush; and a view of Wellington City. South Island views include Milford Sound, Stewart Island, Braida Crags, the Wyndham River; a large group of people at celebrations surrounding the laying of the foundation stone for St John's Church in Invercargill; and two views of an exhibition of a Japanese village displaying such things as banners, lanterns and furniture, held in a hall in Invercargill. Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1901 and 1903. South Island subjects include the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse and quarry, Westport railway yards and wharf, Reefton, and scenes of explosions in Lyttelton Harbour for Regatta Day, 1st January 1909, and a large number of people beside the Spit Volunteer Fire Brigade building. Scenes show the laying of foundation stones for the Petone Waterworks, and for the Baptist Church in Petone, both in 1903. There is also a view of the lecturn for St Augustine's Church in Petone, which was made by the Petone Railway Workshops. Several photographs show the Kelburn Cable Car, the cable car tunnel and the engine room, in 1903. Two photographs of a group of school children, the girls wearing white pinafores over dark coloured dresses. Some photographs relate to New Zealand railways, including specific locomotives, the Rimutaka Incline with the middle rail (part of the Fell System), railway tunnels, bush railways and railway workshops and yards; and some relate to Godber's interest and work in fire fighting. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903.
