Upper Willis Street runs down to Clay Point, at the junction of the present Willis Street and Lambton Quay. Thorndon Flat lies beyond ending at Pipitea Point. Description: A two-storied wooden mill, the mill-wheel to its left, bushes in the foreground, a fence and open fields with a cabbage tree beyond. Shows the Otaki Maori Church of England Mill, "Hadfield's Mill", built 1850, a flourmill. There was a second mill at Otaki, the Pukekaraka Catholic mill, built 1854, established after local Maori had been sent to Sydney to be trained in its use. The Catholic mill had a much larger iron mill-wheel than the smaller wooden wheel shown here. The mill was located on Mill Road, Otaki. (Information from Wellington molinologist, Ian Johnson, 1993) Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s).
