Description: Shows ships in harbour, houses, and a man driving cows on a hillside path at right. From Brooklyn looking across Te Aro and the harbour to the Hutt Valley. At left is a Maori wood-gatherer. Tall tree in left foreground has the creeper kie kie growing on it. A tree has been felled in centre foreground, and there is a cabbage tree at right. Upper Willis Street runs down to Clay Point, at the junction of the present Willis Street and Lambton Quay. Thorndon Flat lies beyond ending at Pipitea Point. Text inset into stylised Maori carved house, surrounded by various New Zealand native trees. Top shows 4 flags, Maori in traditional and European army dress, a view of Mt Cook, and a picture of a white heron. Below text is a Maori war canoe containing Maori paddlers and European passengers. Description: A two-storied wooden mill, the mill-wheel to its left, bushes in the foreground, a fence and open fields with a cabbage tree beyond. Shows the Otaki Maori Church of England Mill, "Hadfield's Mill", built 1850, a flourmill. There was a second mill at Otaki, the Pukekaraka Catholic mill, built 1854, established after local Maori had been sent to Sydney to be trained in its use. The Catholic mill had a much larger iron mill-wheel than the smaller wooden wheel shown here. The mill was located on Mill Road, Otaki. (Information from Wellington molinologist, Ian Johnson, 1993) Quantity: 1 b&w art print(s).
