McKnight album

Description: Album of photographs relating to William Lints' Reveille Company, presented to Beeban Annadale McKnight after her marriage to John McKnight. Beeban Annadale MacDonald performed with the company for five years before her marriage in 1923. Many of the photographs are of her at various sites on the tours around New Zealand. Others include one of Gladys Moncrieff and one of Mae Baird, both selling Reveille programmes in Christchurch. William Lints himself appears in a number of the photographs. Description: Photograph album compiled by David S Laing. Comprises views of Hawke's Bay, particularly Lake Waikaremoana. The first part of the album contains published plan and photographs of the Suez Canal. It includes scenes of shipping at Port Said and on the canal, the pyramids, the Great Sphinx, an oasis, with life at the various localities. There is one photograph of Edinburgh, looking across at the old town from Princes Street, with a line of horses and carriages in the foreground. The latter part of the album contains scenes in New Zealand, many showing Lake Waikaremoana with various locations, including Te Kauanga-o-Manaia (Straits of Manaia), and Te Ana-o-Tikitiki cave. The other main area shown is Napier, the city, the wharves, and two churches. A large group of photographs are groups of people; family groups; groups with tennis rackets; groups with bowls; and a few scenes show a man in military uniform. Description: Panoramic view showing an angled view of the Tarawera Hot Springs Hotel, a two-storeyed wooden building. There is a fire escape on the corrugated iron side wall on the right leading down from upstairs windows. Verandahs along the front, seen on the left angle; gas lamp in a corner of the upstairs verandah. Driveway from the right, and there are two young women sitting on a lawn with a car [number plate: WN-1949] parked between them and the hotel. Six people are standing out the front, two of them women (one of whom is holding a small dog or cat in her arms). Man on a horse has two dogs beside him in the centre of the image. Steep scrub-covered hillside on the far right. Direction sign to the baths is seen between macrocarpa trees on the far left. Taken by Robert Percy Moore. Description: Cabinet card portraits of men and women, taken circa 1890s by three Napier photographers. Includes a seated studio portrait of Constable Thomas Harvey in circa 1896. Harvey wears his policeman's uniform, including hat, whistle, and a medal [long service?]. The subjects of the other three portraits are unidentified, showing a young woman (with the inscription "To my [dear?] Auntie from Janice" on rear of card) and two group images [possibly a brother and sister and another of their parents?]. Photographers are Samuel Carnell, Elite Studio (Hastings Street), and Charles Sorrell (Dickens Street). The auction was held on 10 November 2013 at a house in Mudgeeraba. Ms Rogers donated the prints, and an album, to the State Library of South Australia, who then offered them to the Turnbull Library.

Description: Photographs collected by Mrs Esther Ecclesfield for her daughter Esma Ecclesfield (i.e. Esther Mary Ecclesfield, later known as Esther Mary North, or Esma North). None of the people shown are identified. Several images show camping and views of bays on Waiheke island. Many of the photographs were taken in the Napier area, including several of a woman and two young girls with bicycles standing outside a house in Seaview terrace, Napier, and an interior view of the house; yachts; the Napier Arcade, with the Arcadia Tea-Rooms; children at a Napier beach; and a horse-drawn carriage travelling through water along the foreshore to Cape Kidnappers. Page 4 shows the original Otatara (Ashridge) homestead. Various views around Wellington include Lower Hutt, Belmont Road, Wilton's Bush, Breaker Bay, Muritai and Titahi Bay. In the South Island most of the views were taken around Dunedin, showing Tomahawk Beach, Lawyer's Head and "Cargill's Gates" at St. Clair. Inscriptions: Album page - `Esma. With love from Mother.
