Description: Shows two Maori women collecting kumara at Tokaanu, near the shores of Lake Taupo. The woman on the right bends to collect the roots from the ground; the woman on the left gathers the kumara from a pile into a large kete. They wear similar blue dresses, with long skirts and a belt at the waist. The woman on the left wears a wide-brimmed hat. The waters of the lake and the opposite shore can be seen in the background On verso of the painting is the hand-written note: 'This picture hung in brother Harry's office in Dannevirke ('Huia / Aeorated Waters') until he retired - then it went to his sister (and mine) Floss, at Homebush, Masterton (Mrs Cooper) (in the late 1930s to early 1950s). Thence to us when Floss died (1980-ish). Rumour had it that Harry got it in lieu of a debt owed on soft drinks'. Description: A pocket inside the front cover of this album contains 23 loose photographs of landscapes in New Zealand, many of them Government Publicity Photos. In the South Island various views show Milford and the Milford Track, Tasman Glacier, Mount Cook, and the Buller Gorge. In the North Island there are several views of a group of fallow deer near Featherston; two of geysers at Whakarewarewa; and two of caves in the Waitomo Cave system, showing the underground river in the Aranui Cave, and stalactites in the Ruakuri cave. The main body of the album contains older photographs, circa 1890s, of townscapes in the Wairarapa. Two scenes show groups of Maori performers, one of a posed group of men and women, some holding taiaha and mere; the other of a group of young girls dancing on a podium. Description: Album of scenic views of New Zealand, many taken by Thomas Pringle, others taken by photographers from the New Zealand Tourist Department, and others by unidentified photographers. A number are hand-coloured. South Island scenes include Milford Sound, lake and mountain views, and some of Christchurch city. North island scenes include a number in Wellington, with views of city streets, the Chief Post Office, Government Buildings, St John's Church and the railway station. Most of the other North Island views are of tourist destinations, particularly in the thermal regions, with hot springs, geysers and mud pools. There are a large number relating to Maori, especially at Whakarewarewa, with taniko weaving, flax weaving, poi dancers, te hongi, and posed portraits of young girls in front of a meeting house wearing different styles of cloaks. Description: Charles Hill-Trevor's personal album of the time he spent as personal secretary to Lord Ranfurly, Governor of New Zealand. It records the New Zealand contingents sent to the South African war and public events, personalities and patriotic entertainments associated with that enterprise. Visits to Government houses in Australia record other governors, officials and official residences. On one occasion in Melbourne a New Zealand versus Australia polo match was played. Hill-Trevor shows an interest in Māori, wildlife conservation (including the bird sanctuary on Resolution Island), and the sports of fishing, polo and horsemanship. There are photographs of members of the Ranfurly family and their principal servants as well as the Governor engaged in official functions such as opening the Kaiapoi council offices and laying the foundation stone of the Veterans Home, Mt Roskill, Auckland in 1903. Description: Shows a Maori whare with porch and doorway, and a carved figure at the front end of the ridgepole. A man and woman in the left foreground, and three others figures stand or sit at the front of the whare. At the extreme right, two figures take a canoe to the water's edge. Another whare with a thatched roof appears in the bushes near the water. All figures are dressed in a mixture of traditional and European clothing, some in cloaks, some in blankets over shirts or dresses. Description: Shows a Maori man and woman at the far left, standing outside a whare with carved tekoteko figure. Behind the whare is a palisade and to the far right a waka is being launched into the sea. This work has also been know as 'Meeting house and stockade' A third foreground figure has been pencilled in beside the couple at the left, but has not been completed.
