Climax locomotive 1650 at Ongarue

Description: Photograph of Climax logging locomotive 1650 on the Ellis & Burnand logging line at Ongarue. Two employees are by the train, and a young girl is standing in the doorway of the cab. Photograph taken by A P Godber, circa 1924 Intitally dated from an image that appears to have been taken at a similar time, at APG-1089-1/2, with an original print in Godber Album Vol 109, p 47 (PA1-q-102). Photographs on either side of page 47 are dated during 1916. Climax 1650 locomotive was built in 1924 and arrived at Ongarue in 1924. It was used on the bush tramway to haul logs to the Ellis and Burnand Ongarue mill until 1960. (see NZ Rolling Stock Register wwww.nzrsr.co.nz and Climax Locomotives page at www.oocities.org). Description: Album of photographs taken by Albert Percy Godber between 1912 and 1914. Images include Godber's family, a few of identified people (names listed in the name file), and many with no identification. One image of a group of fitters and turners apprentices at the Petone Railway Workshops, taken in 1913, has all the apprentices named (listed in the full record for Godber negative, APG-0457-1/2) Views of the old Central Fire Station at Petone, and the new Petone Fire Brigade Station; the aftermath of a huge fire at Cooks' Cooperage (on January 14, 1914); and a locomotive which had rolled. Local Petone scenes include the Petone Council Chambers and town clock, and a number of houses in the area, including the home of Godber's friend Tom Mather; Korokoro bush, and the Korokoro Reservoir. Away from the Wellington area, Godber photographed a number of houses in Clonbern Road area; the Makatote Viaduct and the Manganui-o-te-Ao Viaduct. Description: Group of women and children alongside Climax locomotive 1650, at No 9 timber camp, Ongarue. Photograph taken by Albert Percy Godber circa 1925. Dated from assesment of the women's dresses. This image has been reproduced in three publications (as at February 2003): in "The era of the bush tram in New Zealand" by Paul Mahoney (1998, p 51); in "Rails through the bush" by Bob Stott (1973); and "The bush tram to the mill\" by Bob Stott (1981, p 51). The information given in Paul Mahoney's book suggests that this is a picnic party (as given in a pencilled inscription beneath the original print in Godber Album Vol 109, p 47 (PA1-q-102)); but Bob Stott suggests this conveyance was "used to bring bush camp families out to the relative civilisation of the mill settlement and the like".
