Description: Shows a view looking down from a rocky outcrop (partially seen in the extreme left foreground), on to the field of a farm with horses, cattle, a farmhouse, outbuildings, and at far right a haystack. A row of trees runs along one of the boundaries of the property, parallel to the river in the background. On the far side of the river are limestone cliffs and hills. The locality is more commonly known as Clifden, and Cyclopedia of New Zealand, volume 4, Otago and Southland, decribes it as having been a large sheep station. Other Titles - Clifden Notes on backing board recto: Painting of Clifdene Station on the Waiau River, Southland. Formerly owned by R W Aitken. Painted by a French artist. Description: Shows a canoe with sails on the water, and a pa (likely to be Haera Hau Pa) perched on a cliff promontory overlooking the river. There are canoes drawn up on the narrow beach under the cliff and low scrub and a path rising up the cliff face. The view is from the right bank looking southeast across the river mouth and inland, with the pa on the cliff above the left bank Heaphy visited Patea Pa (and Waimate Pa), Taranaki, in 1839 on a journey with Robert Park. Description: Watercolour of White Island shows view of headland in middle distance, with house and outbuilding at right and cabbage trees and cattle further left. In the distance is a small island. The Forbury homestead was built by William Henry Valpy in the early 1850s. Forbury was the old name for St Clair, and was named after Valpy's birthplace near Reading,Berkshire. Valpy's widow lived in the house with her brother the Reverend Charles Jeffreys and his family from 1852 until they moved to other Valpy properties in and around Oamaru in the 1860s. Description: Shows the settlement at Bravo Island in Paterson Inlet, with the farm of Dennison Urban ("Yankee") Smith at extreme left, and the house of the Portuguese whaler Manuel Gomez in the centre with three figures in the doorway. There is cleared land in foreground, cows at pasture, a boatshed (to the left of Smith's beached boat - the "Bravo"), a cowshed at the extreme right, a sandspit at the extreme right beside the inlet in the right background. Two clay cliffs on the far bank are reflected in the water. The details listed are taken from John Hall-Jones "Stewart Island explored" 1994 - ATL has at NZ&P 993.1 HAL 1994. Exhibited in 'Wide-Eyed: Early Images of New Zealand' exhibition of works by settler artists, held at the National Library of New Zealand Gallery, 18 July - 9 November 1997.
