Description: The journal begins in March 1858 and ends in November 1858. A note, 24 years later, describes her revisit to Kohanga and gives a brief historical summary. The journal describes life in Auckland, a voyage to Tauranga on the cutter `Hope', and visits to mission stations there and at Maketu, a trip through the thermal area and back to Auckland through Thames, the Waikato and Taupiri. Eliza Jones describes Maori life and conditions, flora and fauna as well as many of the people she met on her journey, including Archeacon Brown, Rev Volkner, John Kinder and Thomas Chapman, whose poem `The rats' lament', about the Maketu rats, is given in full. Description: Shows Henry Wiliams, John Morgan, Alfred Nesbit Brown and Dr William Fairburn, struggling through a flax or raupo edged swamp, assisted by Maori. According to the associated text, 'The scene took place in a journey of hte missionaries to Matamata ... The European to the left is intended for the Rev. Henry Williams; the one on the right for Mr Morgan, who, having slipped into a hole, is being helped out by the native; the two in teh centre for the Rev. A. N. Brown and Dr Fairburn.
