Description: Photographs taken during the royal tour of New Zealand made by the Prince of Wales in 1920. Many of the images are of military inspections and displays by school children. There are also displays of Maori dancing and singing, the sailors of the HMS Renown, on which the prince had travelled , prior to their soccer match in Dunedin, the prince addressing the crowds etc. A number of the images are in two-part panoramas. Also included are four scenic photographs by the New Zealand Tourist Department which may have been taken in 1903. The photographer for the tour photographs was Guy. Description: 9 views of Canterbury towns: Lincoln hotel, supply store and railway station; Hawarden Post and Telegraph Office; Waikari Post and Telegraph Office; street scene in Waikari; the promenade at Caroline Bay with a large hotel above it; the premises of the Dominion Compressed Yeast Company in Christchurch; and an unidentified town which is probably Timaru with boats moored in the harbour. Photographer unidentified. The image which is probably Timaru is identified in the negative accession register as Rotheram but this town is inland and near neither a lake nor a river therefore this is not likley to be correct. Description: Sketch drawings with colour notes, showing early Christchurch houses and churches, and the Provincial Council Chambers, St Michael and All Angels Church, a windmill, flax and cabbage trees along the river bank, a bridge, and the Port Hills in the distance. Artist may be Rev James West Stack (see similar style of image at A-210-016; Government Buildings Canterbury. [1860?]) One of the images C-081-007 has the name Thompson on the verso. One drawing shows three shops including Albion House [milliner] and Papp[rill, tailor]. These two are listed in Canterbury almanacs for 1860-early 1870s. Another drawing shows St Michael and All Angels, which was built in 1872. Quantity: 8 drawing(s) on seven sheets. Description: A greeting card from Hays Department store in Christchurch. The front cover shows a coloured photograph of one of the floats in the Canterbury Centennial floral procession (1950?), with a crown and orb on a red cushion, the whole float composed of flowers. The back cover shows a calendar for July 1953-June 1954. From the Te Ara website: “Canterbury's centennial celebrations in the summer of 1950–51 featured two celebratory processions. The first was '100 years of progress', which was a historical pageant. The second was a floral procession reflecting Canterbury's pride in the fertility of its soil and Christchurch's identity as the garden city. This was the float of Hay's department store, which expressed the province's continued loyalty to the British monarch” Exhibited in ‘Humble: the life of 100 small objects’, exhibition curated by Barbara Lyon, in the Turnbull Gallery, National Library of New Zealand, 27 August - 17 November 2017.
