Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Description: Album of photographs of New Zealand (pages 1-10), Australia, Egypt, Europe and Canada taken by unidentified photographers circa 1880s. The New Zealand scenes are mostly in the South Island, including the Bealey, Cheviot Hills Station, the flying fox across the Teremakau [i.e. Taramakau] River, the Canterbury Plains, Governor's Bay and Timaru. One view shows two men in a logging camp; two views of the North Island show Muemutu [i.e. Ohinemutu], and Russell's Gold Battery at Taruru Creek. Australian scenes include a group of New Caledonian Kanaka with their "humpies" (thatched dwellings) at Bundaberg in Queensland; and one of the Wombat Ranges "the haunt of the Kelly gang". Several photographs of Egypt include views of Port Said, the Suez Canal, camels, Egyptians, and early ruins. Canadian images include Port Levis taken from across the St Lawrence River, and views of the Niagara and Montmorency Falls both in summer and in winter. Description: Pamphlet lists 26 significant trees of the species fir, copper beech, blackwood, gingko, macrocarpa, monket puzzle, kauri, oak, weeping lime, plane, ponderosa pine, sequoia, alder, weeping willows from St Helena, Norway spruce, cabbage tree, incense cedar, most to be found in Christchurch, but some in Cheviot, Homebush Station, Balmoral, Hanmer. The cabbage tree at Burnside High School is mentioned. The tree most recently planted is the oak planted by Lord Cobham in North Hagley Park in 1962 before his return to Britain. Comprises: - An image of the 'Cheviot football team' with a church in the background, taken by Rentoul, of Cheviot. - A group portrait of two women, two men, and a boy, with a wooden building in the background, possibly a school. Taken by S. Collins of Dunedin. - An image of a soldier in uniform. Inscription on the back reads: "The late Sergeant R. A. Fleming C. Y. C. Killed in action Aug 6th/15 Waldens Knob Gallipoli in his 25th year. To Mr M. Morrison, View Hill, Oxford. From R. Fleming 'Lowland Leas' Fernside". - A photographic postcard of the Waiau Butchery, including five men outside the shop, one on a horse, and one man on a cart with horse, and a dog. Four of the men are dressed in butcher's aprons. - An image of the Dominican Convent, Oamaru. Aotearoa Series. N102.
