Description: Elevated view looking down over the township of Port Chalmers and across the Otago Harbour to Quarantine Island, Goat Island (with single men's quarantine barracks visible) and beyond to the Otago Peninsula (Mt Charles on left and Harbour Cone on right). In the immediate foreground (on left) is the old cemetery. In the foreground there is a railway wagon and large stockpile of rocks waiting to be shifted. In foreground to the right is the cutting for the main Trunk Railway. Retail shops and commercial premises in George Street can be seen, including those of James Menelaus, James Bosworth Taylor (painter & paperhanger) & Simmonds & Sons. On the hill to the left in Grey Street is the Port Chalmers Grammar School and Holy Trinity Church (only partially visible). Photograph was taken by Herbert Deveril and dated ca 1876. The new Port Chalmers Grammar School in the foreground (centre right partially obscured by trees) was built 1874-1875 and occupied from December 1875. The building in George Street on extreme left was not completed until March 1875. Alongside this building is a large excavation for buildings eg Marine Hotel completed in 1881. Description: View of the 21 coffins of the unidentified victims in the open mass grave at the Karori Cemetery, Wellington. The grave is lined with tree fern fronds and wreaths have been laid on the coffins and along each side of the grave. Two groups of people can be seen. That on the left are public mourners. That on the right are the official group with the Duke of Edinburgh. The Tangiwai railway disaster occurred on Christmas eve, 1953, during the first visit to New Zealand of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh. The Duke departed from the official programme to attend the mass burial which took place on December 31 1953. Quantity: 1 b&w original negative(s).

Description: Photo of a war memorial at the Waihi Cemetery at Normanby showing names of men belonging to the colonial forces who died in engagements during 1868. Photographed in 1924 by Robert E Wells. Inscriptions: Verso - top centre - Photos of Historical Interest; Verso - centre - Print 1. The memorial created to those who fell during three engagements in the Maori War. This memorial is to be seen at the little-known Waihi Cemetery at Normanby, South Taranaki. The cemetery is laid out on the side of a hill, known as the "Waihi Redoubt". Near the summit, the hill is very strongly entrenched, the trenches, 10 to 12 ft deep, being in a perfect state of preservation. Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s).
