Description: Photographs taken by John Dobree Pascoe and others, in the Southern Alps, particularly Canterbury region. They include groups of mountaineers; routes traversing difficult slopes; views of mountains, mountain ranges and glaciers; mountain huts and life enjoyed by mountaineers. A number of images in this album have no captions, but some have been identified as having been taken by, or of, Jack Adamson in the late 1890s and possibly up to the early 1910s. A number of postcard images by F G Radcliffe are included. Other photographers and subjects include early mountaineers Kate Gardiner, Mrs Thompson, and there is one image of mountain guide Darby Thomson (who died in an avalanche on the Linda Glacier in 1914). Description: Shows high-country lake with trees in foreground, and a group of cattle (about 7 animals) venturing into the water's edge in right foreground. Rugged peaks in the background. Description: Shows Mount Ruapehu in the left distance. Two horses graze in the right foreground, near a cabbage tree, and two figures stand together a little further off, towards a homestead and outbuildings in the middle distance. There is a group of cattle in the left middle distance. The other works in the group include one dated 1892 and one dated 1893, and it is assumed that all date from the late 1880s and early 1890s. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - T.G. [and title]; Verso - centre - Ruapehu / about 50 miles from Oeo Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Ink and wash, on sheet 137 x 224 mm. Description: Shows a view looking southwest over Lake Taupo, with Ruapehu shown to the left of Ngauruhoe which has a plume of smoke coming from it. The right foreground shows bush and a small plateau on which cattle are grazing. There are cliffs on the lakeside in the left distance. Shows Motutaiko Island in the central distance. Description: Shows drover on horseback at right foreground, with sheepdog on riverbank behind him. He follows a herd of Hereford cattle across a river, with bush, hills and snowcapped peaks behind. Previously thought to be dated in the 1930s; revised owing to information in "Selling the dream; the art of early New Zealand tourism" eds Peter Alsop, Gary Stewart, Dave Bamford (2012), where it is shown on page 370-371, with date given on page 402. Description: Shows a cleared area in a hollow, with a large fallen tree trunk in the left foreground. A man is seated in the centre foreground on a smaller trunk, near his saddled horse. A fence stretches across the foreground, and beyound the white wooden gate, a man drives two cows away through the cleared area, beyond which there is bush-covered rolling plain leading to Mt Taranaki in the distance. On the left two small huts stand among bare trees. There is a tree fern near the huts. Inscriptions: Recto - centre right - (On the slope of a small mound): T.G. / 1893 Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Shows Mount Taranaki in the central distance, beyond a bush-covered plain. In the left foreground a man and woman ride horses, and there are some cows grazing in the field a little off to the right. There is a cabbage tree and bracken in the right foreground. The other works in the group include one dated 1892 and one dated 1893, and it is assumed that all date from the late 1880s and early 1890s, despite the half-cropped date on this work appearing to begin with 6 (i.e. indicating 1860s date). Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - T.G. [and title]; Verso - centre - Mount Egmont or Taranaki / 8,500 feet high - 15 miles from coastline Quantity: 1 watercolour(s).
