Description: Album of landscapes taken by various photographers including Wheeler & Sons and the Burton Brothers, circa 1870s and 1880s. All the views are of New Zealand except the last sequence (p 33-37) showing Rio de Janeiro. Of particular interest are views of a wool wagon drawn by oxen, crossing a ford; a series showing an unidentified curved viaduct under construction (p 28-32); and a number showing a farm run by J F L Jetter at Te Puke when the land was partially cleared, with cattle grazing in paddocks, and Mr Jetter standing by a horse in a paddock in front of his home. Many of the images show uncleared land, with a deep ravine filled with native bush and tree ferns, and a stream running through (p 24-27). Quantity: 1 album(s) Album(s). Description: Shows cows grazing in a fenced paddock, a homestead and farm buildings and a haystack in background Note on back: Timaru somewhere, I think. Possibly the work of Mary Grace Caroline Lysaght. The style is similar to hers and the handwriting may also be hers. Her sister, Annie Lysaght married Thomas Henry Wigley of Opuha Station, South Canterbury, in 1879. Mary Lysaght visited her sister in the early 1880s, and made other watercolours of the area. Description: Album of publicity photographs, chiefly taken by unidentified photographers in the 1930s. Many are photographs of posters, artwork and advertisements, all emphasising the beauty of New Zealand, and how easy it is to travel through the country by rail, and by the New Zealand Railways bus and ferry services. Some of the artwork was done by Stanley Davis (one photograph shows the funeral of S. Davis, with the hearse parked outside the funeral parlour in Kent Terrace, Wellington); and by Marmaduke Matthews. (On page 53 there is a photograph of a black and white sketch of Victoria University College, by Marmaduke Matthews). There is a photograph also of the painting of Sir Ernest Rutherford, by Oswald Birley. Photographs of places include a sequence showing the Dominion Museum and Art Gallery in Wellington, with an exterior view with the Carillon, and interior views of museum exhibits, art gallery spaces (including one room containing the Murray Fuller Exhibition of Contemporary British Art), and the tea-rooms. Several views show the exterior and interior of the Alexander Turnbull Library, with Clyde Taylor the librarian in two scenes seated at his desk, and one of a reader in the reading room. Another sequence shows horses, sheep and bulls being readied for transportation by ferry. Two group portraits are associated with the Empire Games, one entitled `Empire athletes', and the other showing cyclist Roy Taylor with a group. Description: Shows Leslie Hills Station in the Hurunui district, being the sheep and cattle station of George Rutherford. The single storey verandahed homestead with circular carriage drive, is placed on the gentle slope of a small hill, with neatly fenced fields and outbuildings to the left and right. At the left is a group of six conical haystacks. Several horses feed from a covered feed trough at the left. In the centre a horseman meets with a carriage drawn by two horses, one black and one white. In the far right foreground a group of longhorned cattle is grazing, and beyond, a figure is training two horses. A dark cloud at top left, brings a fleeting shower, but most of the farm basks in sunshine. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - N Chevalier 1866 Chevalier was employed by the Otago and Canterbury City Councils to make sketches of the regions, and travelled extensively throughout New Zealand over a period of eight months. A red-brown cow grazes beyond the road in the foreground Probably painted around the end of the 1860s. The artist is known to have been in the vicinity after the wreck of the ketch (probably the "Crest") in 1868 - his picture of Akaroa Heads is dated 1869. Buildings include: wooden cottage with two doors and three windows along front; smaller cottage to the left, with two windows and one door, and another building partly obscured behind these. In right foreground is a low-walled garden, and a gibbet with carcass hanging, beside small hut. In right background is a large shed. Appears to be a picture of an early stage of development at the station, which was first settled by Alexander Lean in 1857, and bought by Hugh Percy Murray Aynsley in the mid-1860s.
