Description: New Zealand colonial treasurer Joe Ward is seen returning from the United Kingdom with a large suitcase containing the loan, while the Opposition members of parliament look on in consternation. Extended Title - The mission to England has been productive of wonderful results, notwithstanding the shadowing of the Opposition detective, and the persistent efforts of the Opposition leaders to damage the credit of the colony in London, and there is grief in the Tory camp. The Million and a Half Loan has been subscribed four-fold, and New Zealand securities were never so high in London. 'Don't you think, Mr Evening Roast', suggests the little doctor, 'that you have overdone those articles of yours. Have they not been too malignant - too vindictive? Description: Album of photographs and newspaper cuttings relating to the Seddon family. Inserted at the front is an envelope full of newspaper cuttings, several relating to the marriage of Phoebe Seddon to Frank Dyer in January 1897, (with a photograph possibly of Phoebe); others relate to official activities undertaken by Richard John Seddon. In that envelope there are two other items of interest. One is an official Christmas card "With the Premier's compliments, wishing Miss Louie J S Seddon a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Wellington, New Zealand, December 1894" signed R J Seddon; and the other is an "Invitation to a presentation and social to the Hon. R J Seddon, Premier of New Zealand on his 51st birthday, June 22nd 1896" Many of the people shown in the photographs in the album are unidentified. There are several which appear to show members of Seddon's family, and which show his first home in Kumara, West Coast. Others relate to Seddon's supporters at Jacksons. Description: Illuminated address to the Minister for Native Affairs, John Bryce, from the citizens of Waitara. It is surrounded by a decorative border including three small sepia vignettes of Mount Taranaki, Ngauruhoe and the Pink and White Terraces. The text mentions a trip to the interior of the North Island, recently completed by Bryce. According to a note in the Reference Biographies Index under Bryce's name, this address was never presented to Bryce. Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Description: Charles Christopher Bowen was born Milford, Co Mayo, Ireland, educated for some years in France, and England (Rugby & Cambridge). He came to New Zealand in the Charlotte Jane, arriving Lyttelton Dec 1850. In 1852 he was appointed inspector of police. In 1860 he crossed the Andes with Clements Markham. On returning to Canterbury, was appointed resident magistrate at Christchruch. Was appointed to the Legislative Council and later became Member of Parliament for Kaiapoi (1875) and was Minister of Justice and Commissioner of Stamps. Description: John Bryce in military uniform, sawing through the leg of a recumbent Maori man. The leg is marked 'flour' and the other leg, marked 'Sugar' has already been removed. A chopping block with axe and chisel are in the foreground, a palm tree to the right. In the background is an exaggerated version of Mount Taranaki, with four military tents in a field and three men ploughing the ground beyond a fence on the right. The cartoon is a reference to the Government's treatment of the Maori passive resisters at Parihaka. Bryce was Minister of Native Affairs and of Defence in 1881 The cartoonist's initials match those of two artists one being Edward Payton; however his monogram was different and the drawing of the figures is quite amateur, so Payton is unlikely to be the artist. The other possibility is Edward Pharazyn. The style of monogram appears to be his, and he commonly signed his work with his initials The stick figures across the fence to the right probably represent the 'ploughmen of Parihaka' who continued to plough their fields in defiance of a Government ban on the activity.
