Description: Album of photographs relating to the Department of Scientific and Industrial Reasearch presented to Dr Ernest Marsden in 1954. Includes detailed photographs of various laboratory procedures and apparatus, including meat dehydration plant in the Meat Research Laboratory; mass spectrometer; electron microscope; Borthwick Beta-Ray apparatus; soil consolidation machines; geothermal bores; knock resistance tests, with a CFR engine; separating constituents of butter fat, the Fats Research Balance Room; members of the Soil Survey Conference in Napier, 1950, and members of the Geological Survey Conference in 1952; Rongotai Aerodrome under construction; the Magnetic Observatory building in Christchurch; the Dominion Observatory, and the Seismological Observatory; Crop Research Division buildings; Hop Research Station; members attending the Grasslands Conference in 1933; and members attending the Seventh Pacific Science Congress in 1949. Description: Interior of a New Zealand Co-op Dairy Company Factory, Tirau. Shows a large quantity of butter being removed from the barrel of a 100-box churn, one of a row of four churns in production in the factory room (including one of 64-box capacity). Two men are working in the background. Photograph taken in September 1951, by Edward Percival Christensen. Other - Original file print caption reads: "N.Z. Co-Op Diary Company's Factory, Tirau. Photo shows nearly one ton of butter being removed from a 100-box churn. Three 100-box churns and a 64-box churn are in production at this factory."
