Description: Photographs of and relating to the Wilson family ex Eketahuna. William M Wilson was born in Glasgow in 1868, coming to New Zealand when 8 years of age. He was apprenticed to John Fitchett, coach builder in Wellington, then with other firms including Rouse & Hurrell. He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. Includes dwellings; carriages; group outings and portraits; 1 of the Club Hotel of F D Pelling; 3 of the Ryan family at Tawa Flat; 1 of a house at Island Bay, 1 of a thatched whare at Plimmerton, a Ghuznee St boarding house; 2 relating to the Burnett family; 2 scenes in Manakau; 1 of D A Greenlees store; 2 of Rarotanga; 2 relating to the business of Lyon & Blair, steam printers and lithographers; 1 of a group outside a house in Eastbourne; 3 relating to the Manson family; 1 of a military camp in New Zealand in preparation for the South African War. Also includes a pocket on the inside back cover containing newspaper clippings, and a photocopy of a letter written by the donor Mrs Helen M G Shaw, which gives some information about the album. Description: Shows views in the Wellington area. The top view looks along Petone beach to the south-east, with Petone Pa and the 'Native Chapel' (the large building on the left). The central view, taken from Tinakori Road's junction with Hawkestone Street, looks towards Kelburn. There is a bullock cart in the foreground, and three Maori carrying large bundles. The nearest house, on the lower slopes of Tinakore Hill, is that of Nathaniel Levin, with the house of Mr Holroyd above it, and Mr Dorset's house further in the distance at the foot of the trees that cover the hill. The lowest view at Ohiro Bay (or valley) shows a flock of sheep attended by a shepherd and a large-single storied house nestled against trees, the home of Judge Halswell. Description: Shows hotel by Hutt River with several other houses, cows on the riverside path on the left, a canoe with a seated Maori in the foreground, a barrel being carried from another canoe or rowboat close to the hotel and a bullock team and wagon in the background. Description: Shows the windmill, looking south towards Mount Cook (with the barracks on top in the distance), Brooklyn hills and Te Aro from the foot of Mount Victoria where Oriental Bay Road begins. There is a sandy beach in the left foreground, with a man sifting sand or shells, probably for construction. The man is being watched by three children. Bullock carts are visible at the foot of the windmill and there are several other buildings close to it. There are two hens in the yard close to a house in the right foreground, and a square wooden construction in the right foreground, possibly a small lime-kiln. The windmill, or flourmill, was built in March 1843 at the foot of Marjoribanks Street and Kent Terrace junction, the present site of the Embassy Theatre.
