Description: In part this album revolves around a family (of William Russell Morris) whose centre is the house at 9 Roscoe Terrace, Wadestown. It also revolves around one of the women in that household, Dorothy, who probably compiled the album. There are a number of women family members of different ages with whom (it would seem) she was close. There are also her colleagues at the Wellington Free Kindergarten, Taranaki Street, and the Newtown Kindergarten where she taught during the 1920s. A large part of this album is taken up with images of children, and by the end of the 1930s it looks as though Dorothy was an infant teacher at Marsden Collegiate School, Karori, Wellington, group photographs of pupils taken between 1933 and 1948. Holidays, and group outings sometimes involving picnics make up another large group of images. The only holiday outside New Zealand is to Fiji in 1920, and most of the images taken during this trip are of Indians and Indian events This is very much a woman's compilation. Men as a generalisation are few and far between and somewhat in the background when they appear. Thus it is also a good source of information on the clothing of women and children between 1920 and 1948 An envelope with four loose prints is inserted at the front of the album. Page 49 contains a newspaper cutting, showing a view of the tram stop at Moorhouse Street, Wadestown, with tram tracks and a tram, with bare fields on either side. Other - The school photograph at top left hand corner of page 39, is reproduced in the book "Marsden School" by Tosti Murray (1967), illustration no. 45. It identifies the class, the year, and all the pupils in the image. Other - The name C H Morris is taken from the Photo Archive Albums index, which says C H Morris was the photographer of three albums, and that he was a postmaster-general in the 1920s. There is no C H Morris listed in Wise's Post Office Directory, however William Russell Morris is listed as Secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department; and listed as living at 9 Roscoe Terrace. Description: Two photographs of a Maori picnic at Pigeon Bush on the occasion of the settlement of the ownership of Lake Wairarapa. The first shows a large crowd of men, women and children with Seddon on the right in front of a two-storey wooden house. The second is of the crowd under the trees, one with a concertina, and three men holding up eels they had caught. A photograph of Members of Parliament in the debating chamber. The names given are: Symes, O'Maara, A L D Fraser, J Palmer, Hall, Field, Witheford, Wi Pere, Bennet, Kaihu, Duncan, MIlls, Ward, Cairncross, Stevens, Hogg, F M Smith, Carroll, McGowan and Hall-Jones. A photograph of the opening by Seddon of the Ballance Bridge described as "over Mangahau". It was taken by P De Loree & Son a photographer based in Pahiatua which may indicate the approximate location. The crowd in the foreground is mostly of children and the bridge has been decorated with plants. A photograph of Seddon, Mrs Hogg and Alexander Wilson Hogg opening a bridge. It is captioned at the bottom left "Mangainoka 4.3.1896" but this location has not been identified and the name on the reverse is illegible. Two photographs by Winzenberg of Seddon and others at a Liberal rally near Greytown and at a picnic possibly on the same occasion. Description: Most of the black and white photographs date from the late 1920s to ca 1950. Of these there are quite a large number of early prints from the late 1920s to the mid 1930s. Most of these have not been "pictorialised" in the soft focus style Searle used for his later finished work. They are small snapshot sized and sharp and clear in detail. The general range of their subject matter sums up Searle's range of interests, photographically speaking, throughout his life. This general subject range is as follows - Railways, family friends and weddings (women and children predominate), Wellington city, Ships, Wellington Botanic Garden, Wellington Zoo (mainly animal studies), ANZAC Days, Some sports, aircraft, some other New Zealand towns, military training Second World War, some overseas trips of which those to New Caledonia during the Second World War and later were the most significant, and landscape studies. This last category makes up the largest group of photographs in the collection, especially in the later "pictorial" prints. Though the majority are unlabeled, most have at least one with identification written on the back - though to find these would require looking through some thousands of prints. Most of the pictorialised photographs have been printed on a pale creamy - brown paper which gives them an antique and arty appearence. Most have been manipulated to soften the focus, at times creating a painterly effect or the effect of some lithographs of the late 19th/early 20th centuries. A few have been treated to look like pencil drawings. Though most are landscapes there are also a fair number of architectural shots and flower studies, and some Māori subjects and portraits. Landscapes are predominantly attempts to emulate the sublime and classical/romantic traditions. Mountains and glaciers, humanised landscapes, with or without sheep, reminiscent of the creations of the 18th century English landscape designers, are most common. A fair number of the latter have been taken in some of our larger public parks and gardens. Humans very seldom feature in them. There are several essays of the Pinnacles at Palliser Bay. Many of the same images have been used over and over again. Describes childhood activities, traversing much of the countryside on foot and pony, finding a bird's nest which contained a human skull with a stone axe in it, and which is now in Napier Museum. Also describes Porangahau School and mentions Miss Tracey who taught there from 1924-1945 and Alf Mudgway. Mentions itinerant gentleman who took music. Description: Views of annexation ceremonies, of the local people and their leaders, of Lord Ranfurly and his party which included Naval personel from the Mildura who added presence to the occasions and raised flags during the ceremonies. There are photographs of two lepers on Molokani Island in the Penryn group and the Governor on a pearl shell diving boat on Manihiki. On the way back to New Zealand the Mildura stoped at the Kermadec Islands. Photographs were taken of Sunday (Raoul) and Macaulay Islands, and of the crater on Curtis Island. This part of the album ends with the Mildura in Lyttelton Harbour and the Governor coming ashore in a boat. Most of the rest are scenic shots of the Tourist highlights of New Zealand. There are three photographs of women crossing the Tasman Glacier and boiling a billy. The album ends with a group of photographs of the Channel Islands According to a note at the front of the album, all photographs, other than the New Zealand scenic tourist shots, were taken either by Captain Baynes or P M May, Surgeon, both of HMS Mildura. However, this is one of several albums recording the annexation of the Cook Islands held in the Photograph Archive. Many of the same images occur in all of them and a large number of these came from negatives held in the Malcolm Ross Collection. Malcolm Ross was a New Zealand Journalist who as the correspondent for the Times news paper, accompanied Lord Ranfurly's party on the Mildura, and was responsible for photographing the occasion. It was selected with some other items in July 1935 by Dr Scholefield, New Zealand Parliamentary Librarian, during a visit to Hampton Court Palace where Isabel Baynes lived. From 1935 to 1998 the album was housed in the New Zealand Parliamentary Library.

Description: Album of photographs collected by Rev G E Mason on a trip around the world in 1885-1886. Comprises photographs of California, Tasmania, Sydney, Ceylon, Egypt and New Zealand. In 1884 the Bishop of Lichfield recieved a request from the bishops of Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand, to send clergy to conduct missions in their dioceses. To this end he invited Rev G E Mason, and Rev Charles Bodington to do the job. The two clegymen left Liverpool for the United States on the 4th of July 1885, spent a summer in New Zealand, and returned to England in September 1886. Description: Fiji and its people, its traditional buildings, crafts, and industries; the milk trade and a milk bottling plant; forestry and crops; scenic views and places; public health and tourism. As well as photographs taken in the 1970s, there is also a small group stamped "Fiji official photograph, Public Relations Office, Suva" dating from the 1950s. The Ngata Memorial College photographs date from 1977. They show the buildings, students and student activities, including a dance performance by visiting Cook Islanders. There are also five photographs and one negative of an international seminar on the relavance of Ghandi to our times, held in New Delhi in February, 1971. At some time between 1984 and 2000 all the prints relating to Tonga were returned to Ernest Crane. Wendy Crane returned these when she donated negatives in February 2000.
