Description: New Zealand scenes including thermal areas in the North Island, and river, mountain and roading scenes in the South Island, taken by various identified and unidentified photographers between about the 1880s and 1900s. Two photographers, Josiah Martin and Patrick Thomas Malaghan took most of the images. Other identified photographers include Edmund Wheeler, F. Finch, A.J. Iles, Charles Spencer, Edward Le Grice, J.V. (James Valentine), and Ross (Photographer, Invercargill). Several of the unidentified photographers are listed under their initials only, and include one with the initials T.S.M (or S.T.M. in a monogram), also A.A.B., R.G., Rooney, Luney (?), and L.M. A large number of those taken by Patrick Malaghan show Skippers Road and the Shotover River, with Pinchers Bluff, Huttons Cutting, Hell's Gate, and Skippers Creek. Thermal areas in the North Island show the Pink and White Terraces before the 1886 eruption of mount Tarawera, and also a number taken after the eruption, including the remnants of Te Ariki Pa. A large number also show various geysers, mud pools and hot springs. One method of crossing rivers is shown with the Hooker Wire Bridge (or Hooker Cage) and a "chair" travelling across a wire in Skippers over the Shotover River. Note on this box reads: "1st Ball Hut print" (no. 33); and "J. Martin "Mt Cook"" (no. 66). Most of the places identified are listed above. Other Titles - Old P.O.P. Description: Shows the complex of joined buildings of the Achilles Gold Mine at Bullendale in the Wakatipu District; these buildings are reportedly of iron (see below), and two tall smoking chimneys are in operation. In the foreground is a wooden bridge over the swiftly flowing Shotover, and at the far right is the covered chute, with a wooden flight of stairs leading up to its base. In the background at far left, another building and pipe can be seen. In the background are craggy mountain peaks. Catalogue notes quote the 'Cyclopedia of New Zealand', stating that the battery had "thirty stampers of heavy weight, together with the usual blanket, tables and boxes. Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Wellington Regions, by an unidentified photographer. The South Island images include Queenstown, Lake Wakatipu, Arrowtown, Paradise, Diamond Lake, Balclutha, the Clutha and Catlins Rivers, and scenes in Dunedin including the Botanical Gardens. A large number show the Shotover River and details relating to gold mining, including a miner's stone whare on the bank of the river and two views showing the waters of the Shotover escaping from a tunnel driven for mining purposes to allow the river to be diverted from its natural course. The North Island views are all in the Wellington region, particularly views of the harbour with its various shipping activities, with many ships named. The latter part of the album consists of about 13-17 small photographs attached to each of 6 pages, many of family and friends, identified only by Christian name. The house at No. 3 Aorangi Terrace is shown (lived in by Ernest Somerville, importer, in 1905-1906; and by George Jefferson Belt, tally clerk, in 1909), and a house in Hawkestone Street.
