Includes views of the construction on a timber dam (probably in Coromandel), Coromandel Public Hospital, Kennedy Bay (Coromandel), a stream crossing between Opitonui and Coromandel, bush camps in the Coromadel district and a traffic bridge in Rodney County. Daniel P Parker is recorded in the Wise's Post Office directories as an engineer in Coromandel from 1902 to 1930. Between 1906 and 1911 he is also recorded as a photographer. Description: Album of photographs (mainly landscapes) taken by John Tenison Salmon between 1930 and 1941. The album is divided into sections (not in chronological order), many relating to camping holidays with an unidentified companion. Areas covered included a Christmas holiday trip in 1937 to the East Coast and thermal regions around Tikitere and Waimangu, the Morere nikau forest, Mount Maunganui beach, Hongi's track, the buried village at Te Wairoa, and Rotorua. A North Auckland trip in December 1938 included camping as far north as Paihia, Russell and Waitangi, the Waitangi Falls, the Waipoua Kauri Forest and Trounson's Kauri Park, also Auckland, the Kaingaroa Plains and Waiouru Valley. Areas of erosion were noted, and mangrove swamps. An Anniversary Day trip (22-23 January 1939) took Salmon to the Putangirua Pinnacles in the Wairarapa; and in September 1941 he went to the Hawke's Bay area. In 1945 he went on a North Island Expedition working on malaria control, with ?Bissett, and William John Phillipps. February 20-27 1939 was a trip across the Napier-Taupo Road, and included a number of images of the silt and desolation caused by a great flood in the Esk Valley in 1938. In 1936 Salmon went on a geological trip to the Rotorua area, and at Orakei Korako he was particularly interested in "sinter formations" (thermal deposits of silica, of which the Pink and White Terraces were examples). Description: Photograph album containing outdoor views taken circa 1900-1905 by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in the Northland Region of New Zealand. Photographers unidentified but many possibly taken by Thomas Pringle who was employed by the New Zealand Government Tourist Department in 1901. Compiler of album unidentified. Some images have captions. Images mainly show outdoor views, including landscapes, buildings, beaches, industry (including logging and gum digging), and harbours. Some show people. Whangarei and Whangaroa Harbour feature. Despite the title of the album: 'Maori life and scenery', Maori people do not predominantly feature, except in a loose print taken by Thomas Pringle in circa 1905, showing three girls playing 'whai' string game, and some other prints showing Maori families and individuals. Other: All prints have an inscription "New Zealand Government and Tourist Department Protected 7.1.03", however 7 January is not the date the photographs were taken. It is likely to be the date the was registered/patented. Source of title - Title supplied by Library Inscriptions: Backing board recto - On spine: "ZZ/P575/Photographs of Maori Life and Scenery" and "General Assembly New Zealand library" insignia. This insignia is also on the front of the album. Relationship complexity: This album relates to PA1-o-1884 and PA1-o-1885 which came to the library at the same time and belongs to the same series of albums which were from the Parliamentary Library. Description: Suspension bridge built by the Hare brothers over the Kaeo River in Kaeo, Northland, circa 1900. Photograph taken by A W Powell, circa 1950s. Note on back of file print reads: This unusual suspension bridge crosses a river a few miles south of Kaeo. Nth Auckland The bridge was built in twenty two days by the Hare brothers of Kaeo on the property which was then owned by W Hare. (Information from personal communication with Peter Green, the current owner, in 1997). The bridge was still in use and in good condition in 1997 when it was viewed by Helen Smith. W Hare was Wesley Hare. He and his brothers Joseph, William John, Wesley and Metcalf Hare formed Hare Bros, storekeepers of Kaeo. Joseph Jnr and William John Hare concurrently operated as Hare Bros, storekeepers of Whangaroa.
