Description: Views mostly in and around New Plymouth but including clergymen gathered for Archdeacon Govett's jubilee in 1898, crowds in Pukekura Park for Queen Victoria's Diamond Jubliee in 1897 and a Floral Fete in 1896, a homestead called Tokotahi near the Tiraumea River in Pahiatua County, the old mountain house on Mount Taranaki, and an area called Grant's Braes (now Waverley) in Dunedin. Description: Bridge over small stream in the foreground, a fenced in house with a tall gable and an outbuilding, with several trees in its garden in the middle ground, Mt Taranaki in the background See Recollections of Travel in New Zealand and Australia by J. C. Crawford, London, 1880, p. 86, where Crawford mentions visiting "the parsonage near the Waiwakaio" in the summer of 1847. The parsonage for St Mary's was at Te Henui, some two miles away from the church. It had half an acre of land with it. Its first occupant was William Bolland, who died on 29 May 1847, presumably shortly after Crawford's visit. Description: Shows a view looking up the Huatoki Stream towards Mount Taranaki. There are houses on the slopes on either side of the stream, a stockade at the top of the hill at the right, and a waterwheel and mill on the left bank. A road leads along the left bank, and there is a bullock wagon, and a group of men and horses in the left foreground. The men carry guns, although a pair standing upstream could be fishing, and one man in the foreground could be carrying either a flag or a fishing net. Although this probably relates to an E A Williams image in the Hocken Library, it has similarities to the E A Williams watercolour at ATL B-139-006, showing the mill at the edge of the stream. Probably the Alpha Mill, described as being on the Huatoki Stream, by Ron Lambert of Taranaki Museum (see letter at AT 13/14/1, 14 May 1997). Based on an E A Williams watercolour. Description: Album compiled circa 1863-5, by Spencer P T Nicholl of the 43rd Oxfordshire Light Infantry. Some photographs taken by John Kinder. Photographs include images relating to military life, including the Oakura Redoubt, the Kaitake Redoubt, officers of the 68th regiment, military camps in Taranaki, and the Militia Hospital in New Plymouth. Pages 15-18 have the pencilled caption `Lake Taupo', but in fact are photographs of the volcanic area around Lake Rotomahana, and were taken by John Kinder in 1865. They include a sulphur volcano (whakataratara), the Whatapoho geyser, Otukapuarangi (Pink Terraces), and the Tarata or principal boiling springs.
