The image which is probably Timaru is identified in the negative accession register as Rotheram but this town is inland and near neither a lake nor a river therefore this is not likley to be correct. Description: Gordon Rex Andrewes born 1914 in Opononi Hotel which parents were managing for A S Andrews and Sons. Recalls memories of early life in hotel and describes clientele which included commercial travellers arriving on horse back or on boats. Describes family involvement in company of eight stores and recalls the Taheke store being the first store to close due to burglaries, fires etc. Lists other stores. Talks about school days and remembers school as a big happy family with no racial tensions. Mentions teachers, Miss Davine and Mr and Mrs Duckering. Recalls family attending St Luke's Church at Pakanae which opened in the 1920s and refers to Bishop Averill. Childhood fun included fishing, eeling in the bush, visits to sandhills across the harbour and picnics. Recalls visiting old house at Whanui belonging to Selwyn Watkins. Gives details of job with Dalgetys, describing wage patterns. Talks of parents' struggle to provide for children through hard times and their generosity to those in need. Describes family involvement during flu epidemic. Recalls marriage in 1948 and return to family firm, A S Andrewes in Kohukohu, moving to Opononi store in 1953 which he managed until retirement in 1982, when A S Andrewes & Sons Ltd ceased to exist as a trading company. Description: The collection includes two different sets of photographs. The first is the photographs from the collection of Thomas Vernon Mitchell taken while he was serving in the army in the Middle East in the Second World War. They include tourist scenes of the ancient olive trees in the Garden of Gethsemane; the city of the dead in Cairo; street scenes in Jerusalem, Tiberias and Aleppo; tombs of the caliphs in Cairo; the Dead Sea; the tower of King David, Jerusalem; the Hotel Yarkon, Tel Aviv; the citadel entrance, Aleppo; and Tiberias Hot Springs. Other images are a 24th Battalion chuch parade in February 1941, two views of Mitchell's grave, the effects of a sandstorm on a military camp in the desert, Mitchell and his friends on rickshaws, Papakura infantry at Trentham in October 1940, and the 24th Battalion party at Cairo 1941. Description: The first and left-hand section of a three part panoramic view of New Plymouth, shortly after its establishment as a New Zealand Company settlement. Shows the mouth of the Huatoki Stream and the waterfront of the township, with cows drinking at the water's edge, the stream bridged, with a canoe sailing along it, houses and various features indicated, including "Point near the mouth of the Waitera [Waitara] River, Company's Emigration Depot, Company's Hospital and forge, Mr Merchant['s house], Messrs Perry, Mr Shaw, Company's Survey Officer, Wesleyan Chapel, Company's Store, Devon Hotel, Freemason Arms, Mr Ibbotson, Mr Scott, Mr Lakeman, Church, Messrs Vercoe, Mr Webster, Mr Grube". A small boat is being dragged out of a tent shelter on the left, several people are tilling crops in their gardens, there are sheep on the background hills to the left, people and horses and carts in the streets, and barrels outside the Freemason's Arms. The accompanying text reads: The spectator stands with his back to the sea, in the garden of the [New Zealand or Plymouth] Company's agent. There is only an open Roadstead [Harbour] here, and the colonists are essentially agricultural. Surf-boats, however, and excellent moorings, provided by the Company, facilitate the landing of passengers and goods. Mount Egmont is distant about fifteen miles. Quantity: 1 colour art print(s).
