Description: Michael Wilson (7) oils the chain on his bicycle, while sister Bronwyn (10) makes sure her tyres are fully inflated. Behind are the Aitken brothers, Andrew (10), and Peter (11). The children were neighbours and lived in Maungaraki. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer on the 25th of march 1983. The children were preparing to take part the next day in a "Bike for Fun" in Lower Hutt. This was a 17 kilometre ride beginning at Avalon Park organised by the Western Hutt Rotary Club. Description: Children from Muritai School, San Antonio School and Wellesly College cycling around the Eastbourne coast. Photographed by an Evening Post staff photographer. These children were taking part in a holiday programme organised by a committee of representatives from the schools together with the Eastbourne Borough Council. Description: Photographs of and relating to the Wilson family ex Eketahuna. William M Wilson was born in Glasgow in 1868, coming to New Zealand when 8 years of age. He was apprenticed to John Fitchett, coach builder in Wellington, then with other firms including Rouse & Hurrell. He was employed by Wilfred Woolf in Eketahuna in 1894, and subsequently bought his business, and entered the firm of Kibblewhite and Wilson. See Cyclopedia of New Zealand, Wellington Provincial District, Eketahuna. Includes dwellings; carriages; group outings and portraits; 1 of the Club Hotel of F D Pelling; 3 of the Ryan family at Tawa Flat; 1 of a house at Island Bay, 1 of a thatched whare at Plimmerton, a Ghuznee St boarding house; 2 relating to the Burnett family; 2 scenes in Manakau; 1 of D A Greenlees store; 2 of Rarotanga; 2 relating to the business of Lyon & Blair, steam printers and lithographers; 1 of a group outside a house in Eastbourne; 3 relating to the Manson family; 1 of a military camp in New Zealand in preparation for the South African War. Description: Photographs of scenes, and events in the Wellington Region. Photographs include views of Mount Cook Boys' School staff at a picnic, children from the school on an outing to the coast where they were picnicking and swimming, and teachers in fancy dress. A number of images show Trafalgar Day celebrations, with a parade through the streets of Wellington, and activities at Newtown Park. Two ships shown are HMS Powerful in Wellington Harbour, and La Bella after being washed ashore at Ohiro Bay, 15th October 1904. Description: A collection of photographs of the Hunter family particularly of George Ernest Hunter and his wife and dogs at their home in Watt Street, Wadestown but also of his brother Robert Henry Hunter (the two men look very alike). They include a number of photographs of their house, garden and neighbourhood but also a postcard of Paekakariki beach, a postcard of two wagons with passengers passing through the Devil's Elbow between Buttermere and Keswick in the English Lake District, seven men with penny-farthing bicycles ca 1880, a carte de visite of four young Maori wearing kakahu taken by Swan & Wrigglesworth, and a photograph of a sketch of Porerua Bay near Wanganui (mid 19th century). The collection includes a letter to a Mr Ellingham from I W Macdonald of 8 Lower Watt Street, Wadestown offering him the photographs. Foxley Norris album

Description: Photographic album created by Joseph Foxley Norris, with many images of places visited in Great Britain, including castles, cathedrals, stately homes, ports, landscapes, and bridges. Joseph Foxley Norris was a founding member of the Cyclists' Touring Club in England, and was a member of the Pickwick Bicycle Club in England with one image being a group portrait of members of the club. A number of the English scenes were photographed by G.W.W. (George Washington Wilson). Other regions visited include Cape Town and Rio de Janeiro. Views of New Zealand are mostly in the South Island, with a few of Wellington (including Government Buildings, Parliament Buildings and Government House). One photograph taken by James Bragge shows a group of unidentified Maori standing outside a meeting house in Masterton. South Island views include a bicycle "meet" in Christchurch, with a large crowd gathered, and a number of penny-farthing bicycles visible. A number of images show men riding penny-farthing bicycles and the dangers of so doing, with posed views of two men underneath their bicycles and one clutching a fence, taken in and around Christchurch. On page 108 is hand-printed award `Anniversary Sports, Christchurch,N.Z. 16th December 1880. The following ten views taken from the Cathedral Tower, Christchurch, are the 3rd prize in the One Mile Champion Bicycle Race won by J. Foxley Norris, Pioneer Bicycle Club'. Other views include a group of about four men touring along the West Coast Road, and notable buildings in Christchurch and Dunedin. One image shows the "cage" crossing the Teremakau River. Description: Photographs of the Nelson Region, Wellington Harbour, Featherston, Ruamahanga Valley and the Rimutaka Hill Road, probably taken by George William Barltrop in 1899 (Identification from other albums in this sequence). None of the people in photographs are identified, but include several scenes with a woman and her husband; a group portrait at a wedding; two older women in a garden; a picnic group (6 women, one man and three children); two women carrying baskets of plants, with a man wheeling a bicycle (on the road to the Nelson Reservoir); and three young boys in a garden. A sequence of twelve photographs includes two men, members of the 2nd Contingent, at a military camp (possibly in the Nelson area), preparing to leave for the South African War, in 1899; rows of horses near tents at the camp; soldiers marching; a Nelson street with a banner reading `For Queen and country. (James Beard has labelled Abel Tasman Point and located it in the Takaka area. This suggests the location of the Abel Tasman Memorial at Tarakohe. Abel Tasman Point is many miles away from the Takaka area at the southern end of Golden Bay between Ligar Bay and Wainui Inlet. Given that there is no sign of the memorial in this group of slides, I suspect that it is the former location in Golden Bay.) Landscape and Mountain views, Takaka.
