Description: Album of publicity photographs, taken by unidentified photographers, chiefly in 1935 At the beginning of the album there are a large number of photographs of the buildings, and crowds at a race meeting at the Trentham Racecourse. (See article by O.N. Gillespie in New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue, 12, March 1, 1935). The album has many publicity photographs, designs for railway advertisements and posters, all showing the advantages of travel by rail. The advertisements include methods for travel savings: `Buy travel stamps. Travel savings N.Z.R. 1/-, 2/-, 2/6, 5/-, from railway stations & booking offices'; also `Start saving to-day for your trip away...'. Other posters advertise cheaper travel in the off-season, including summer holidays at the Hermitage, with low combined rail and motor fares" as well as advertising full season trips to tourist destinations. There is one photograph of a programme [?] for "New Zealand Authors' Week, 1936. Souvenir". Near the start of the album there is a large group of views at Flock House, agricultural college at Bulls. They show pig farming, dairy cows, sheep, lucerne for pasture and vegetable growing (See New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 9, Issue 12, March 1, 1935); and in one of these Lord Bledisloe is bending down examining pasture (See New Zealand Railways magazine, Vol. 9, Issue 11, February 1, 1935) There are a few individual and group portraits, but only one or two are identified. Interior photographs of Union Steam Ship Company luxury liners Rangatira and Aorangi, are shown as individual pictures, as well as in a montage (published in New Zealand Railways Magazine, Volume 10, issue 4, July 1, 1935). Description: A view looking up to a conical hill with a path winding up it and palisades at various points, especially on the top of the hill. According to a note on the back of the mount this pa was "constructed by Ngati Pukeko at Te Whaiti early in the nineteenth century. They were expelled from it by Tuhoe. Many of the palisades, of totara, were standing in 1895, but those depicted are a restoration by the artist, and are wrongly placed." The note is signed Elsdon Best and dated 6.2.1915. There is another view of the same pa site by Boscawen, titled A bush pa in the Urewera Country. It is a wash drawing, ca 180 x 250 mm in the Mitchell Library, Sydney. It is in the scrapbook of T. E. Description: A hollowed out tree trunk, with a carved loose flap, able to be hit so that it reverberates The original for an illustration in J. C. Andersen's 'Maori Music' (1934); also used in Elsdon Best's 'Games and pastimes of the Maori' (1925). The work was purchased with a portrait of Elsdon Best and the connection with him seems more likely than that with Andersen. Ryan visited Te Whaite in 1891. There may have been a third carved head at the base of the flap shaped from the tree trunk. An inscription on the verso may read 'Erase the lower head' and the base of the flap has been painted over with Chinese white gouache. Inscriptions: Verso - top left - 84. The pahu or tree gong at Te Whaite. Erase [?] [one crossed out] the lower head [in pencil, in an unknown hand.
