Description: Ms of book published by author. History of the family of Dr Thomas Renwick and his first wife, Adeline Absolon, and second wife Anne Smith. Adeline came alone to New Zealand in 1843. However, she found life in the colony dull and some time in the late 1850's or early 1860's returned to London. A year after her death in 1870, Thomas married Anne Smith. Born in 1844 Anne came to New Zealand with her elderly mother. After Thomas's death in 1877 she continued to run their farm, and a substantial part of the history relates to financial problems she had to deal with in order to keep it in production. Description: Saxton recorded both the minutiae of his daily life, such as food, crops he was growing, as well as observations on local politics, New Zealand Company affairs, negotiations between the Company, government officials and settlers and especially describes the discomforts and lowered expectations of being an immigrant. Not all persons mentioned frequently have been entered (see index for full list). Physical Description: Typescript with annotations by transcriber (36 cm; green linen) Finding Aids: Index is part of collection (qMS-1762). Provenance: The diaries were intended to be destroyed at the death of the diarist. However, they survived and Dr F A Bett, whose collection is now in the Nelson Provincial Museum, transcribed the extant diaries. There are two sets, one in the Bett Collection in Nelson, the other in the Turnbull Library. The Turnbull copy has many annotations by Dr Bett, generally with additions to the text. It is understood that parts of the diaries were in Greek and Hebrew but it is not known how much Dr Bett translated or how much of the diaries he retained.

Section 24 is shown to be owned by Fitzherbert and section 28 by Richard Barton. Shows the Hutt River's path as at 1881, the main roads, shingle beds, Waiwhetu Road, the town settlement of the eastern side of the river including the Mechanic's Institute, post office, family hotel, Whitewood Hotel, the new bridge's toll house, the new bridge, as well as the Railway Hotel and school house south of the bridge. Description: Album of photographs taken during the 1860s by various photographers. All the images are related to Colonel William Marvin (1834-1915) who came to New Zealand circa 1858 and was possibly attached to the 70th Regiment of Foot during the New Zealand wars. There are many photographs relating to military activity, including military working parties at Fort Britomart; military and naval camps at Maungatawhiri Creek, Queen's Redoubt, Drury, Ngaruawahia and Albert Barracks; a monument to the 43rd Regiment at Gate Pa near Tauranga; Potatau's tomb with a sentry guarding it; and the Auckland cemetery. Many of the images are of Auckland, including `Hale's Boarding House, where I first slept in N.Z.'; `The Masonic Hotel where I was made a mason in 1861'; `My last batchelor home near Constitution Hill green, next door to the Dacres'; `St. Mary's where I was married 4th August 1862'; a long sequence showing Queen Street from different angles in 1866'; and various homes that he knew, including Heaphy's house in St George's Bay, Dillon Bell's House in Parnell, and `Little Sutton' in St. George's Bay. Other images of interest include a mining camp at Coromandel; the tree on which Volkner was hanged, with a seated group of Maori beside a whare; a Maori church that is completely thatched, in the Waikato; and two views of the sailing ship Ida Ziegler [i.e. Zeigler] `In which we returned from N.Z. round Cape Horn, 29th Jany to 1st May 1867'.
