Description: Album recording a motoring and camping holiday through the South Island of New Zealand. This took in the New Zealand South Seas Exhibition in Dunedin and included the West Coast, Otago, and Canterbury. The central part of the album has images of Khandallah, Wellington, and the family home in that suburb. Family photographs include Doug on his Norton Motorcycle, and Jack and Neville similarly posed on a Douglas Motorcycle. Rene and Frank stand at the net holding tennis rackets, and mother has several images with young Joyce. The last part of the album recordes something of a holiday to Auckland where the family camped at Brown's Bay and took a trip to Kawau Island. A group shot on Mt Messanger on the way back and some views of Pukekura Park New Plymouth complete the album Quantity: 1 b&w original photographic print(s).

Description: Album of photographs taken in the Otago and Southland Regions, by unidentified photographers. All the locations are well identified. Some of the images are related to railways, including railway tunnels (e.g. The Caversham Tunnel when under construction circa 1909), and the Hunts Road Tunnel; the Clutha Railway Bridge; the Wingatui Signal Box; the Balclutha Railway Station, railway yards, and sales-yards; railway barns; D-class engine (New Zealand Railways steam-engine No. 355); the Owaka Express; and bush tramway tracks, one sawmill typical of small mills in the Catlins area. Many of the images are taken with an emphasis on atmosphere, including sunsets, stormy days on the coast near Dunedin, evening at Ocean Beach, storm clouds at Lawyer's Head, and "By beach and sand-hill". Description: Volume one of 'The 9.5 am' Feb 1902 to Jan 1903. Contains whimsical articles about political and 'colonial' life. Includes jokes, poems, extracts, and illustrations. In an inscription on the inside cover of this volume, Johannes Andersen describes himself as "Editor, article writer, anecdotist, P.D. et hoc gen an". Includes images of people, buildings and landscapes in the Canterbury, Otago and Southland Regions including: - The Canterbury Provincial Council Buildings captioned as "Offices of the 9.5 am". - Pigeon Bay, Banks Peninsula. - Several photographs of F M B Fisher who "left with the 19th contingent April 19, 1902" and a poem about Fisher leaving for the South African War, 1899-1902 (aka Boer War) titled 'A Farewell'. Also an image of "The Tenth Contingent passing City Council Chambers". Pages 81-83 and 95-98 of this volume features 'Tramps Abroad' written by Fisher, relating to his experiences of the South African War. - The 'Onawe', 'Fleet Wing', and 'Zephyr' yachts. Captioned as "At Lyttelton Regatta Day" (located between p35 and 36). - "The editor and his assistants. Drawn from life' which includes images of a devil, snakes and spiders, and text "D.T [in German DER TEUFEL]" (between p48 and 49). - A garden scene, including three women, captioned as "Opposite Mile Road, near Stanmore Bridge". - Waimakariri from bed North of Otarama, and Waimakariri from bank near Otarama. - A coloured hand-drawn cartoon captioned "Our special artist at Sumner. Who is it?" featuring a man with a very long nose, upon which are dangled a bunch of carrots. The man is riding a small donkey. - A photograph of Johannes Andersen 'Our fighting editor'. - The Southern Alps captioned 'The backbone of New Zealand'. - 'Land sale at Darfield' featuring men inside a wooden building. - Images of the Avon River. - The Post Office building in Ashburton. - Eight photographs of Hanmer and the surrounding area, including images of the Sanitorium. - A section titled 'Southward Ho!' which includes photographs of Port Chalmers, the 'Mararoa' steam ship, and 'Falls on Fraser River (Stewarts Island)'. - An article relating to the 52nd Anniversary of the Canterbury Province, located at p114 of the volume (Jan 1, 1903). It includes a photograph of some stone and wooden buildings captioned as "'The Ark'. A specimen of archaic architecture". Information relating to the content as well as the date taken and the date printed, is on the rear of most prints. Most prints relate to the West Coast Region, but also some images of Nelson, Canterbury, and Otago regions. Identified people are: Kopara Sawmill workers Bill Brown, Owen Jacobs, Morry Pullman, Hans Van Ruyven, Jimmy Birchfield, Doug Macalister, Joe Kavanagh, Neil McLean, Archy Fluerty, saw doctor John Henry Ord, Ted McGhie; licensee of Nelson Creek Hotel D Graham; Dorothy Debenham; Mick Bowie, and chief guide at Mt Cook Hermitage. Unidentified people include a female French tourist and some children. Featured natural environments include Karamea beach scenes, mining and sawmilling sites, and Buller Gorge. Featured town sequences include Reefton and Nelson's Creek houses and businesses, many of which are derelict. Description: Album opens with two images of Denniston buildings all of which are houses except for a church. There are some views of the surrounding countryside as seen from the plateau and a view of the roperoad railway with trucks crossing the plateau in winter. Two waterfalls are probably scenic features photographed from the horse track connecting Denniston with the coastal plain. Other images relate to Christchurch. These include boating on the River Avon, and groups of people photographed standing on two different bridges, one of them in the Botanic Garden. From Wellington there is an image of the Skyline tea kiosk at the top of the Kelburn cable car. Four images record people on a beach backed by vertical sandstone cliffs beyond which can be seen what looks like gum trees. Description: There are six general groups of photographs making up this album. The first relates to a surveying tramp through part of the the south eastern Rimutaka Ranges. It begins at Wharepapa outstation west of Lake Onoke (Lake Ferry). There are views of Palliser Bay, Lake Ferry, Wharepapa outstation, the surrounding farmland, and people attached to the station. The survey team's tramp into the mountains followed the Wharepapa River north west of the station and then up the Papatahi stream to the Papatahi trig. Here they set up camp which is depicted under snow. They then moved south to the trig on Mount Matthews where they again set up camp. There are images of tents, men, native forest, Mt Matthews, the trig, dogs, the surrounding ranges, and views of Palliser Bay. The party descended with their equipment via Matthews Stream to Eglington's Whare at Mukamuka. The second group is a record of a family holiday at Tokaanu and Lake Taupo. Again there are views of the tents, and the party consisted of women as well as men, including Girdlestone's mother. There are images of the Tokannu River, the Tokaanu Stream, the Tongariro River, views of Tokaanu township, the Tokaanu wharf on Lake Taupo, boats, the Waimarino track, hot springs, rod fishers on Lake Taupo and the rivers, and the Tongariro Bridge. There are a group of images taken during a fishing trip and picnic at Waihaha, Western Bay, Lake Taupo, and a view of Waihi Village and the Waihi Falls. Another group of images of Maori were taken at Otukou west of Lake Rotaira, and include views of the meeting house "Okahukura". The third group of images relate to a survey camp in the Tokaanu/Waimarino area, though there may be camps in more than one location. The main camp was located at Tokaanu, but another is described as being on the Waimarino plains, and another is located on the Pihanga Saddle. There are views of the camp, tents, men, and of life in the camp such as hair cutting, and Maori visiting on Sunday (one of the team's members was Maori). Images of bush and distant views were taken along the horse track from Otukou to Tokaanu, and there are views of the Volcanic Plateau and Mount Ngauruhoe, Otukou Village, hot springs, Ketetahi hut cookhouse and springs on Mount Tongariro, Pihanga hill south of Tokaanu, the countryside and a climbing party on Ngauruhoe. The fourth group consist of twelve photographs taken in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. The fifth group of 46 images record a climb up Mount Egmont. There are views of the mountain, native forest, climbers in the snow, and the accomodation house. One group of images consists of close ups of native alpine plants in flower. The sixth group relate to a walking trip on the Volcanic Plateau through forest and open country. There are views of the mountains, cliffs, a stream and celmisias in flower.
