Description: A collection of photographs of the Hunter family particularly of George Ernest Hunter and his wife and dogs at their home in Watt Street, Wadestown but also of his brother Robert Henry Hunter (the two men look very alike). They include a number of photographs of their house, garden and neighbourhood but also a postcard of Paekakariki beach, a postcard of two wagons with passengers passing through the Devil's Elbow between Buttermere and Keswick in the English Lake District, seven men with penny-farthing bicycles ca 1880, a carte de visite of four young Maori wearing kakahu taken by Swan & Wrigglesworth, and a photograph of a sketch of Porerua Bay near Wanganui (mid 19th century). The collection includes a letter to a Mr Ellingham from I W Macdonald of 8 Lower Watt Street, Wadestown offering him the photographs. Description: Mainly record an Edwardian New Zealand family living in the country, or in a small country town. There are views of the sea shore, ships going by, paddling and sitting on the sand. There are pictures of father driving the gig, in the back yard with the children and feeding the goat. The chilren are dressed up as adults, or are playing with their mother. Description: View looking down on a house, garden and trees close to a beach. A rocky headland to the right and hills across the water in the distance. A two-masted steamer, a yacht and two row boats in the water of Mahurangi Estuary. Heaphy's wife Catherine Laetitia was a Churton and Mary Doran Churton (later Eyre) was Heaphy's sister-in-law. The writing on the drawing is not Heaphy's and it appears that this is a copy by Mary Churton of a Heaphy drawing. Other Titles - Churton, Mary Doran :Mahurangi February 20th 1855 Inscriptions: Recto - beneath image - Mahurangi Harbour; Verso - Mary Doran Churton. Mahurangi, February 20th 1855. [both inscriptions are in the hand of Mary Churton] A-144-007 is a photograph of a virtually identical drawing, but with Heaphy's signature and title in his hand. Description: View from the south end of Paihia Beach, probably in the 1840s, looking north along the beach with a row of houses at the foot of the hill to the left. Several Maori with their canoes are on shore, and a food storage platform appears outside the fenced area surrounding the European houses. Includes William Williams' house, a two-storied residence, built of stone and mortar, with 3 dormer windows, burnt down 15 Feb. 1856 Catalogued by both Sotheby's and McArthur's as the work of Cuthbert Clarke. However on both stylistic and handwriting grounds (c.f. Merrett's work in A.T.L. and the British Library), the work appears to be by Merrett. Description: Shows the foreshore at Paihia with three canoes at the water's edge, and the houses, huts and gardens of the Church Missionary Society station back from the beach. A flag, probably the Union Jack, is flying from one of the hills behind the houses. Published as a wood engraving in the Church Missionary quarterly papers, no. 79, Michaelmas, 1835, frontispiece, with title Mission station, Paihia, New Zealand.. Inscriptions: On former paper and linen backing, removed and stored with the drawing: In ink, top centre visible through linen 'Paihia'. On linen, in another hand, in pencil 'Henry'.
