Description: View of Cowes Bay looking south-west down onto the beach from a high vantage point on the headland to the north of the bay. The wharf can be seen in the middle foreground, and a large wooden building (Cowes Bay boarding house / hotel?) is in the middle distance behind trees. People are walking on the beach, and rowing or playing in boats close to shore. A group of people are buying things at the shop on the beachfront opposite the wharf. Survey trips and holidays to the South Wairarapa and Tokaanu area

Description: There are six general groups of photographs making up this album. The first relates to a surveying tramp through part of the the south eastern Rimutaka Ranges. It begins at Wharepapa outstation west of Lake Onoke (Lake Ferry). There are views of Palliser Bay, Lake Ferry, Wharepapa outstation, the surrounding farmland, and people attached to the station. The survey team's tramp into the mountains followed the Wharepapa River north west of the station and then up the Papatahi stream to the Papatahi trig. Here they set up camp which is depicted under snow. They then moved south to the trig on Mount Matthews where they again set up camp. There are images of tents, men, native forest, Mt Matthews, the trig, dogs, the surrounding ranges, and views of Palliser Bay. The party descended with their equipment via Matthews Stream to Eglington's Whare at Mukamuka. The second group is a record of a family holiday at Tokaanu and Lake Taupo. Again there are views of the tents, and the party consisted of women as well as men, including Girdlestone's mother. There are images of the Tokannu River, the Tokaanu Stream, the Tongariro River, views of Tokaanu township, the Tokaanu wharf on Lake Taupo, boats, the Waimarino track, hot springs, rod fishers on Lake Taupo and the rivers, and the Tongariro Bridge. There are a group of images taken during a fishing trip and picnic at Waihaha, Western Bay, Lake Taupo, and a view of Waihi Village and the Waihi Falls. Another group of images of Maori were taken at Otukou west of Lake Rotaira, and include views of the meeting house "Okahukura". The third group of images relate to a survey camp in the Tokaanu/Waimarino area, though there may be camps in more than one location. The main camp was located at Tokaanu, but another is described as being on the Waimarino plains, and another is located on the Pihanga Saddle. There are views of the camp, tents, men, and of life in the camp such as hair cutting, and Maori visiting on Sunday (one of the team's members was Maori). Images of bush and distant views were taken along the horse track from Otukou to Tokaanu, and there are views of the Volcanic Plateau and Mount Ngauruhoe, Otukou Village, hot springs, Ketetahi hut cookhouse and springs on Mount Tongariro, Pihanga hill south of Tokaanu, the countryside and a climbing party on Ngauruhoe. The fourth group consist of twelve photographs taken in Pukekura Park, New Plymouth. The fifth group of 46 images record a climb up Mount Egmont. There are views of the mountain, native forest, climbers in the snow, and the accomodation house. One group of images consists of close ups of native alpine plants in flower. The sixth group relate to a walking trip on the Volcanic Plateau through forest and open country. There are views of the mountains, cliffs, a stream and celmisias in flower.
