Description: These recordings were made as source material for the written biography `Dr Golan Maaka : Maori doctor' (1995). Dr Maaka practised medicine in the Whakatāne district for 35 years and combined Pākehā and traditional Māori medical practices. He also did medical rounds in the Ureweras. Description: Album containing 1928 souvenir booklet celebrating New Zealand's first Commerce Train, which travelled through Auckland Province between 26th October 1928 and 4th November 1928. Souvenir number of the Commerce Train News, published by New Zealand Railways. Bound in with the book are photographs taken by an unidentified passenger on the trip. There are photographs in the booklet, which include several portraits of men on the trip, photographs of farmland, dairy factories, cement works, Arapuni Hydroelectric works showing the dam and the spillway, kauri forests, trains and cars, and group photographs of the personnel. Full lists of personnel are included in the book. Other - Photographs possibly taken by Robert Angus, manager of Cook & Son, Shortland St., Auckland, who was a member of the tour. Description: Transparency slides of Mr E G Williams' (Edmund Gardner Williams') travel in New Zealand between 1958 and 1959. This sheet of slides shows coastal ranges, and sheep being driven along a road near Gisborne; Tokomaru Bay; a railcar at Gisborne Railway Station; Matawai township; scenes in Whakatane and the Whakatane River; farming scenes at Holmridge farm at Waihue, near Dargaville, owned by Vernon and Ruth Woods, and a photograph of the Woods family. The family include Vernon and Ruth, and Clive and Barbara Woods, and "young Vern". Mr Williams spent Christmas 1958 with the Woods family. Slides on this sheet are numbered 579-603 with gaps for those removed for lectures on New Zealand. Arrangement: Mr Williams transferred slides (nos. 579, 582, 592, 594-595, 597, 599) showing a view of Gisborne; sheep droving near Gisborne; scenes at Holmridge farm including a group of a truck in a hayfield, and members of the Wood family. They were were from this sequence as part of a representative collection on New Zealand for various lectures which he gave when he returned to England.
