Description: Map showing the East Cape, Bay of Plenty, Tauranga, Northern Hawkes Bay and just south of Taupo. Shows Te Kooti's approximate route, and direction (arrows on line) and his engagements with the Hauhau people. Stops at certain pa are dated, some added text (before photocopy) e.g. "Final escape to King Country", "Visit to Takangamutu". Key stops included Opape, Tologa Bay, Turanga, Whakatane, Rotorua, Te Pourere, Puketapu. The linking areas for all these points was the Urewera country. Te Kooti was a Rongowhakaata leader, military leader, prophet, religious founder, pursued by colonial forces, eventually took refuge in the King Country where Te Kooti remained until pardoned in 1883. Description: Page from the Illustrated London news with sketches of 10 weapons - 1. Small tomahawk (patiti), used for hand-to-hand fighting; 2. Cartouche-box (hamanu) to carry eighteen rounds; 3. Greenstone club or mere, otherwise called poenamu, which is the baton of a chief; 4. Whale bone mere, called papaoa, carried by a band round the neck; 5. Spear (tao) either of hard wood sharpened or with an iron point or a bayonet fixed at the end; 6. Long tomahawk (kakanroa) for thrusting or cutting in a hand-to-hand fight; also used to walk with; 7. Guns (Pu) which are mostly percussion muskets and many were also found which had been taken from our men; 8. A chief's spear (taiaha) ornamented with the breast feathers of the brown parrots; 9. Bayonet (peniti); 10. Club (wahaika) made of hard wood or whalebone and used either to thrust with the small point or to strike with the axelike head. Description: Military map of the area from Tauranga Harbour to the East Cape and south to Whangawehi Stream, across to Lake Rotoaira. Lakes, rivers, streams, bays, islands and harbours are drawn, some of which are named. Includes hachures. A mission house is marked near Gisborne. Blockhouses, redoubts, engagements, Maori pas, kaingas and confiscation boundaries as gazetted are referred to in a key. A second key is given for marked routes and campaigns of Te Arawa and Ngatiporou. Campaigns against Te Kooti include names of commanding officers, places and dates of battles. Names include Colonel Whitmore, Mair and Preece, Hamlin and Witty, Lambert, Deighton and Herrick. Te Kooti's routes are marked. Description: Photocopy of a topographic map, including military notes, of the area from Matata to Tarere, including the Oputao River. The Ruatahuna District is referred to. Rivers, settlements and some tracks are named. Notes about these tracks include information about the condition of them and time taken by foot soldiers and on horseback. Includes some battle sites, also the time taken to reach one destination and the farthest point reached by St. John. Extensive notes about place names, distances and the scale are partially obscured by strips of paper during the copying process. A second scale was written on the strip of paper on the map prior to copying, and a dashed line on the map states 'reduced scale'. Includes Pano Kingi's name in a note. Title and cartographer's name handwritten twice in pencil at top left of map, believed added at later dates. This information used as title of the map. '68/1882 1/96.8' is handwritten on top right corner. The name 'Oputao (R)' pencilled in at a later date. 'Neg' handwritten in pencil on top left of map. Quantity: 1 map(s). Description: Hand drawn military map of the area from Tauranga to the Waiapu River, south to Poverty Bay, across to Lake Taupo. Lakes, mountains, rivers, islands, bays, points and harbours are drawn, some of which are named, as are some settlements. Includes tracks, some of which are described as 'Te Kooti's trail' and 'Mair's pursuit of Te Kooti'. Battle sites are prominently marked, named and dated. A note written adjacent to several battle positions state that these cannot accurately be determined. Title handwritten in pencil along the top of the map. Quantity: 1 manuscript map(s). Includes a letter from Mair to Cowan written in 1913 in which he says 'I am brimming over with particulars and am the only European left who can talk about those times...' referring to the fighting around the 'Hot Lakes'. The letter is torn off in the corner with slight loss of content. Also includes an envelope titled 'Captain Mair. My scouting expedition to Poripori. 1867' which contained an incomplete handwritten letter and account by Gilbert Mair. The first main entry in the notebook says 'Rotorua: Te Kapenga fight 1870' and inside front cover includes Cowan's itinerary from November 18, 1918 to January 6, 1919, the various places he visited and sometimes who he interviewed there. Description: View of the trenches at Gate Pa, Tauranga, looking east, the front of the pa to the left, the rear to the right, after its capture by British forces in April 1864. European soldiers standing guard, two carrying a stretcher in the background, a rifle and parts of the broken palisade lying in the foreground, and wounded and dead Maori men visible in the trenches, including Reweti, in a trench to the right, facing the viewer. A tunnel on the left is marked as a covered way, and a tall pole in the background, on a slant is the flagpole. A low land formation in the background to the left is noted as Maungatapu cliffs with cemetery. Tauranga Harbour can be seen in the background Very similar to A-033-009. Robley made many copies of this view Another such view in Cowan's New Zealand Wars has Robley's additional explanatory text around the outside (neg 10985 1/2). The section along the left, to the left of the trench and inside the palisade is a covered passage leading to rifle pits. The figure lying in the left trench is described as 'dead Maori on blanket'. The figure in the right-hand trench is described as 'bearded wounded Maori' and 'Sticks knocked from the palisade' and 'sticks of palisade scathed by shot', '68th sentry on the higher part of the Pa', as well as 'fallen flagstaff in rear' are noted. Scenes of action are marked as crossed swords and some battle sites are named - Gate Pa, Te Ranga, Oropi, Waehi, Whakamarama. Directional arrows point to Rotorua and Okauia.
