Description: Lord Ranfurly's party crossing the Whakatane River, photographed in March 1904 by Malcolm Ross, during the last stage of their journey from Waikaremoana to Ruatoki. Lord Ranfurly is riding the grey pony in the centre. Inscriptions: Album page - beneath image - "Late in the afternoon we rode through the broad swift-flowing waters of the Whakatane". Malcolm Ross, in "Through Tuhoe land" (Christchurch Press, 1904) states that "Late in the afternoon the Governor and his party rode through the broad, swift-flowing waters of the Whakatane, here a noble river, and rode slowly forward towards the native village of Ruatoki, where were gathered about a thousand of the tribespeople and the representatives of all the Maori Councils of New Zealand." Description: Most of the images relate to a survey team (or teams) operating in the hill country west of the main road between Raetihi and National Park, centred in the area around Ruatiti. The two names in the album for the area are the Ruatiti Block which includes the Ruatiti Stream and the Manganuioteao River, and the Riariaki Block and trig immediatly to the north. There are images of team members, camp life (ie storing food, cutting hair, living quarters, rod fishing, and swimming), groups out on the job (ie cutting trees, making survey pegs, moving through the bush with packs and equipment, on horse back, returning from the hunt, packing in supplies, making observations, and constructing the Maungaroa trig station), and views of the native forest, and rivers. Interspersed among these photographs are others which include social occasions such as farewelling a survey team member, a motoring trip associated with a large house called "Pihautea," an amateur instrumental group, a cricket game in Nelson, and a group in Albert park Auckland. Album is extensively captioned though few people are identified. - Motoring trip of North Island in January 1931, following family on a camping trip in a A-Model Ford. Route, as suggested by image order in album, goes via Hastings, Wairoa, Lake Waikaremoana, Morere, Gisborne, Opotiki, Ohope, Whakatane, Rotorua, Whakarewarewa, Tauranga, Waihi, Thames, Mercury Bay, Tui Glen, Waiwera, Waipu, Whangarei, Bay of Islands, Mount Messenger and Dawson Falls. Images feature camp grounds and sites, car with tent awning erected and with gear packed alongside, picnicking scenes, motoring scenes, and tourist sights on route. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. This sheet shows a sheep drover on horseback with a pack horse and two dogs herding a flock of sheep near Gisborne; a woman sitting on a tree stump overlooking Lake Taupo and the mountains; fumarole vents near Lake Taupo; the Chateau Tongariro on Mount Ruapehu; a man standing beside the Crater Lake on Ruapehu; Mount Ngauruhoe; a garden in New Plymouth; a distant view of the house "Tupare" near new Plymouth; Mount Egmont; views on the road to Tokaora; railway line running through the centre of Palmerston North; the Manawatu Gorge; a street in Masterton; the Wairarapa plains and sheep farms; a stand of cabbage trees; dry riverbed of the Putangirua River en route to the Putangirua Pinnacles, and a view of the Pinnacles. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
