Railways album 9

Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. Description: Original caption reads: "Forestry spokesman for the Environment and Conservation Organisations (ECO) Mr Guy Salmon unfurls a symbolic unsigned cheque made out to Minginui Sawmills Limited for $500,000 on the steps of Parliament yesterday. "Conservation organisations have been pressing the Government to extend such a loan so that the Minginui mill could afford to install machinery to process exotic (pine) timber at its Whirinaki State forest site. "The cheque, representing a Development Finance Corporation suspensory loan, was presented to the deputy Opposition leader, Mr David Lange, yesterday afternoon as part of a conservation protest at Parliament. Description: Photographic postcards of Wellington and Rotorua taken circa 1940s. Three taken by Royal Studios and two by Heaton Clairemont Peart. Photographers of other images unidentified. Wellington City views are taken from Mount Victoria and Tinakori Hill. Prominent landmarks seen in these photographs include the National War Memorial and Carillon, Wellington High School, Basin Reserve cricket ground, Wellington East Girls' College, Wellington College, Winter Show Buildings, Weir House, Wellington Whares, St Gerard's Church, Basin Reserve, Wellington Railway Station, and the road to the Hutt Valley. In Rotorua sites photographed include Whakarewarewa with pa (whare and carvings) and hot pools (including Maori women washing clothes), Government Gardens Bath House and entranceway, Ward Bath house, top of Eagle's Nest geyser at Wairakei, and the shore at Lake Rotorua. Description: Publicity photographs taken by various unidentified photographers for New Zealand Railways Department. The first sequence shows Napier before the 1931 earthquake, and after. Photographs include various buildings seriously damaged, including the hospital, the Masonic Hotel, Public Trust offices in Napier and in Hastings, the Hastings Post Office, and a view of the Napier Park Refugee Camp. Further sequences show areas of interest in New Zealand, including an early photograph of the Pink and White Terraces taken by Charles S Spencer (before the Tarawera eruption in 1886); the Government Sanatorium in Rotorua showing various therapeutic facilities and treatments including diathermy treatment, the private slipper bath, the auxiliary massage douche and the cooling room; a group of men working on carvings at the Rotorua School of Maori Arts and Crafts; members of the Rotorua Hunt Club riding out; Chateau Tongariro interior and exterior views; the Blue Baths in Rotorua; Akitio Homestead and Maunsell's Homestead (Tinui); the Hermitage and Tasman Chalet at Mount Cook (Aoraki); and the Government Accomodation House at Waitomo. Description: Most of the collection is of images of New Zealand buildings. The most extensive area covered is the Wellington region which includes Wellington City, Lower Hutt, Petone, and the Kapiti coast. Wellington City is extensively covered with photographs taken between 1977 and 1980. Subjects include old and new houses, old and new office and commercial buildings, shops, churches, halls, and street scenes. All are documented as to the date the photograph was taken, the street, the street number, and in many cases the name of the building. Architectural images include details such as cast iron, fretwork and turned ornamentation, murals in commercial buildings and public sculpture. Also included are smaller architectural subjects like telephone boxes. Other places include Akaroa, Rotorua, Masterton and the Wairarapa. From beyond New Zealand there are sections on Sydney and Noumea. There are a large number of photographs of Churches taken in Canterbury, Malborough, Nelson, and Wellington. By far the larger number are from Wellington and relate to Fearnley's book on Wellington churches (published in 1977). Title supplied by Library.
