Description: Shows a red-cloaked figure with a spear making a speech to a seated circle of armed and cloaked men, before a large-trunked tree in bush. At right a shallow cliff drops to a beach with 6 canoes drawn up, and seven figures standing beside them. In the right distance are three sailboats, and on the horizon, part of an island or headland. Previously attributed at different times to Charles Blomfield (according to Graham Chote of International Art Centre, Parnell), and to Nicholas Chevalier. Inscriptions: Unsigned and undated. Quantity: 1 oil(s) on canvas stretched on board.. Physical Description: Oil on canvas on board, 180 x 305 mm. Provenance: Bought with another small oil by the same hand (G-230-2), by Dr Neville Hogg, Dargaville, at International Art Centre, Auckland, 1976. Sold at Peter Webb's auction, Auckland 12 August 1993, lot 226 to John Crowder.

Description: Shows full-face head and shoulders portrait of a Maori chief with moko, short curly hair, a turkey feather over his right ear, ear ornaments and a feather cloak. The chief's name was Te Uri Kanae Attribution based on the fact that an engraving was made of this work in 1824, and Lewin is acknowledged as artist ("Lewin del."). A copy of the engraving is held at A-092-002 According to Ellis' "Early prints of New Zealand" (Christchurch, 1978), A Hoodee O Gunna [Turi a Kuna] was a signatory to the first sale of land in New Zealand, to the Church Missionary Society in February 1815. Dating has been made on the basis of this. The subject is a chief of Rangihoua and nephew of Te Pahi. Lewin is said to have made his sketch of this subject in Sydney; there is no evidence for Lewin having visited New Zealand. Other Titles - Te Uri o Kanae Turi a Kuna Rangihoua Inscriptions: None. Description: A Maori chief standing in a beached canoe, addressing a crowd of warriors, mostly seated, with a few standing. Two other long canoes are on the beach, one with a sail is in the water, and others are pulled up close to a pa or kainga in the left background. A dog sniffs the ground in the foreground. Most men are armed with guns, although one on the far right holds a taiaha. A gourd and flax kit are centrally placed amongst one group of men. Earle's text reads: "A party of warriors had collected at the Bay of Islands for the purpose of making a hostile visit to a tribe on the banks of the Thames. They were detained by contrary winds; and for several days were constantly engaged in listening to speeches from their chiefs, who addressed them from a canoe hauled on shore ... one [canoe], which I measured, was 70 feet long, and carried one hundred fighting men." Description: Diary entries outlining Marsden's daily activities and opinions. Contains considerable ethnographic data about the lifestyles and activities of the Northern Maori people that Marsden interacted with. Source of title - Transcribed Diary was kept during Marsden's second visit to the Bay of Islands in 1819. Quantity: 1 volume(s) (157 pages). 0.02 Linear Metres. Physical Description: Holograph, 32 cm (Bound of Zaehnsdorf in brown morocco) Processing information: Archivists notes - Pasted in the front were two letters from Marsden to James Kemp and Hongi Hika (Shunghee), dated 1824. These letters are now housed with papers in folder Outward correspondence - New Zealand Mission, MS-Papers-0453-02. Digitisation details - Volume has been digitised to include front pages which are blank and these are indicated in the digital structure map. Pages are numbered but numbering includes broken sequences and original pages may have been misnumbered or removed. Small leaves have also been inserted into the journal in places.
