Description: Diary entries outlining Marsden's daily activities and opinions. Contains considerable ethnographic data about the lifestyles and activities of the Northern Maori people that Marsden interacted with. Source of title - Transcribed Diary was kept during Marsden's second visit to the Bay of Islands in 1819. Quantity: 1 volume(s) (157 pages). 0.02 Linear Metres. Physical Description: Holograph, 32 cm (Bound of Zaehnsdorf in brown morocco) Processing information: Archivists notes - Pasted in the front were two letters from Marsden to James Kemp and Hongi Hika (Shunghee), dated 1824. These letters are now housed with papers in folder Outward correspondence - New Zealand Mission, MS-Papers-0453-02. Digitisation details - Volume has been digitised to include front pages which are blank and these are indicated in the digital structure map. Pages are numbered but numbering includes broken sequences and original pages may have been misnumbered or removed. Small leaves have also been inserted into the journal in places.

Description: Military map including Hokianga Harbour, north to Wangaroa Bay and northeast to the Bay of Islands during the New Zealand war of 1843-1847. Shows route taken by first military expedition, from the Bay of Islands to Tarrawahena Patuhoni's Pa along native route, and to May and June battle sites. Shows changing positions of Heke Pokai's pa sites where battles took place with the military forces [under Colonel William Hulme]. Shows mission stations, various pa sites, a cart road, forest land, rivers, the volcanic range and Mr William's farm. Inset shows Heke's pa at 1st July 1845, and the strategic position of two colonial military batteries 500 yards from the pa, one which includes native 'allies' and Walker's party. Description: Cadastral map from Kohatu Point (below Hokianga Harbour) north to Ahipara Bay and east to Lake Ohea, Mangonui and south to the Bay of Islands. Shows named land blocks denoting ownership, with colour coding distinguishing properties owned by settler and Maori. Over 20 [Native] reserves are named and numbered, such as Whangatauatia Reserve, 62.1.0 [acres], No.7 (some are un-named); some blocks of land are named in Maori, some of which denote acreage such as Rawene 1957 acres. Most Maori land includes acreage, while settler land does not. Many Pakeha blocks have surnames included. Church Missionary Society landed is depicted as C.M.S. A large Church Mission block is also depicted. Annotations on map include 'disputed' land in 'Shepherd' block (named 'Mokau') and in 'Horeke' block (in fountain pen). Description: The French ship La Favourite crossing rough seas, to enter the Bay of Islands in stormy conditions in October 1831 during the visit of its captain, LaPlace and his crew. The title of the print, and its appearance, suggest that there is a bar, or difficult sea passage at the entrance to the Bay of Islands, near Kororareka (modern Russell). This is not the case. Description: Map, with cadastral and topographical information, showing the Church Missionary Society Mission Station at Paihia, circa 1835. Shows the site of an old whare paru mud hut on H William's property, W William's stone house, the chapel, WT Fairburn's house and carpenter's and smith's shops. Shows C Baker's home, and the first printing office beside a stone hut occupied by David (Rawiri) Taiwhanga about 1833 with his children Hill and Martin. Text on map mentions that Sunday school teacher Mr Joseph Matthews, and Hira and Matenga (Hill and Marsden). Shows bathing places in the Horotutu Creek, and further text mentions the site of New Zealand's the first game of cricket, Fairburn's trek across the sandbar to Motu Maire and shows outlying islands. Names Waitangi and Horotutu Beach. It is not conclusive whether or not Edwin Fairburn made this copy of the original map, or the orignal map itself.
