Artist unknown :Birchdale Valley
Date: 1871
By: Webster, Kenneth Athol, 1906-1967
Reference: A-253-013
Description: View across a flat river valley, with a shallow river winding through, and a small house against trees to the left, at the foot of bush-clad hills and snow-capped mountains. Birchdale Valley is not a current geographical name but the scene has been identified as Birchdale, the station of George Edward Mason, west of Mason's Flat, Hurunui. Grouped on acquisition with A-253-011 and A-253-012, both attributed to C. D. Barraud. The paper appears to be identical, although the style is not obviously that of C. D. Barraud (in the case of A-253-013), nor does the title appear to be in his hand. It could have been captioned by someone else, later. It was not Barraud's practice to put inverted commas around the titles of paintings. He did occasionally, however, work in the combination of pencil, wash and Chinese White seen here. In 1871 Barraud was in the South Island on a painting tour, preparing work for his book 'New Zealand graphic and descriptive'. Birchdale Valley is not found as a current or recorded obsolete geographical name. Two Birchdale Homesteads are a possibility as locations for this view, both in Canterbury, close to the foothills of the Southern Alps Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - 'Birchdale Valley, 1871' [in pencil outside a ruled line defining the edge of the picture] Quantity: 1 watercolour(s). Physical Description: Pencil, watercolour and Chinese white on cream wove paper, 177 x 260 mm
