Description: Album of publicity photographs including designs for advertisements for use in the new Zealand Railway Magazine; designs for posters for use in Railways Ticket Offices and one for a large neon lighting sign "Suggested `Claude Neon' Display for New Zealand Railway Publicity Department, Wellington. `Travel by train'". One photograph is entitled "`Post' corner 1880. Now site of King's Chambers". A number of images show a [Labour Day?] parade of marching people, and floats some of which are advertising NZ Railways holiday destinations, with slogans reading `Come to Rotorua', `Come to Waitomo', `Come to The Chateau Tongariro'. There are designs of title pages for the New Zealand Railways Magazine; a view of a commemorative key with a sheaf of corn on the handle in a presentation box; and designs for a programme of events surround the laying of the foundation stone for the new Government Railway Station, Wellington, N.Z. by HRH the Duke of Gloucester, December 17th 1934. These are followed by photographs taken during the Duke's tour of New Zealand, including crowd scenes in Wellington, Maori celebrations of welcome at Ngaruawahia, and scenes in the Rotorua thermal area. There are a few individual and group portraits of the management and administrative staff of New Zealand Railways, most unidentified. Description: Recent prints from old photographs of Wellington, originallty taken between about 1841 and 1929. Includes one photograph of a painting of Wellington waterfront from 1841, by Charles Heaphy. Only a few images identify the photographers, the Burton Brothers, Tyree Brothers and James Bragge. The Bragge photograph (looking down to the Harbour from Hill Street taken in the 1880s) was identified from his horse-drawn carriage with his name and occupation emblazoned on the side. Description: Photograph album of views of Wellington, ranging from copies of early paintings from the 1840s, and early photographs up to the 1870s, to a series of postcards from the 1920s. Most of the early images have clear descriptions, giving year made, location, and in some cases further information about buildings that can be seen. For example, one view shows Kebble's house, now the site of the Grand Opera House. Views in the postcards are identified, but no dates are given. Description: Transparency slides of New Zealand selected by Mr Williams as a representative collection to be used in a series of lectures on his return to England. This group includes both slides Mr Williams took himself, and slides he purchased. This sheet shows a sheep drover on horseback with a pack horse and two dogs herding a flock of sheep near Gisborne; a woman sitting on a tree stump overlooking Lake Taupo and the mountains; fumarole vents near Lake Taupo; the Chateau Tongariro on Mount Ruapehu; a man standing beside the Crater Lake on Ruapehu; Mount Ngauruhoe; a garden in New Plymouth; a distant view of the house "Tupare" near new Plymouth; Mount Egmont; views on the road to Tokaora; railway line running through the centre of Palmerston North; the Manawatu Gorge; a street in Masterton; the Wairarapa plains and sheep farms; a stand of cabbage trees; dry riverbed of the Putangirua River en route to the Putangirua Pinnacles, and a view of the Pinnacles. The slides are not in his original numerical sequence, and are selected by subject relating to particular talks. Arrangement: These slides were selected by Mr Williams from his original sequence to create a representative collection of New Zealand images which he used in illustrated lectures on his return to England.
