Description: A tiny Kiwi sits in the pocket of a slightly larger kangaroo and both sit in the pocket of a huge man representing the USA. The kiwi comments 'In defense matters it's vitally important that you can stand on someone's own two feet...' Refers to Australia being New Zealand's most important security partner and to the signing between PM John Key and US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on the occasion of her November visit to New Zealand of the 'Wellington Declaration' that 'formalises a new strategic partnership between the two countries, commits to regular meetings at foreign minister level, working together on trade and holding annual military talks'. Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully told Morning Report there have always been limitations on interactions because of New Zealand's nuclear free legislation. "It means that while Australia and the United States have an alliance, we don't have one, and we had to try and find a new, positive way of expressing a partnership that wasn't an alliance." Description: Australian Prime Minister John Howard, bowed down under military kit, is followed by New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark, blithely tossing flowers of (of peace). Exhibition caption reads - In 2001, Australian and New Zealand defence priorities diverged more sharply than previously. While John Howard's Australian government boosted defence expenditure and re-equipped strike elements in its airforce, Helen Clark's New Zealand government abandoned all pretence that the RNZAF was capable of a military role and concentrated on better equipping the army to play a peace-keeping role in trouble-spots like East Timor. Exhibited in 'The Other Side of the Ditch' exhibition of cartoons on the New Zealand-Australian relationship curated by Ian F. Grant of the New Zealand Cartoon Archive and exhibited in the National Library Gallery from 28 November 2001 to 24 February 2002 to mark the centenary of Australian Federation. Also exhibited at X Space Gallery, Auckland University of Technology, Auckland in mid-March 2002 and at Old Parliament House, Canberra, Australia from 26 March 2003 to 29 June 2003.
