Description: Shows a design for a rondel window, depicting a Celtic cross, the pattern developed from the Celtic plait designs of the period of the Lindisfarne Gospels. The centre is St Cuthbert's cross. On the verso of the card is a photograph of the window in situ (or a mock-up thereof). (From information on the verso of the item, supplied by the artist.) It would appear that this window was in fact intended for the East wall of the chapel, as the artist has stressed that the rondel depicting the life of St Cuthbert should be placed on the West wall (see A-444-021). By: Shore Bennett, Beverley Doris, 1928-
Reference: A-444-021
Description: Shows a design for a rondel window, depicting the life of St Cuthbert in figures, some taken from illustrations in the Venerable Bede's life of the saint. The lower figure is from a group of boys playing with Cuthbert at ball and bat; the left figure shows the saint with his eider ducks; on the right, Saint Cuthbert as Bishop, bestowing a blessing; the top panel shows the saint's relics being moved to Lindisfarne. The centre panel shows Christ. The general format of the design is based on the Celtic design of the period. On the verso is a photo of the window in situ (or a mock-up thereof). (From information on the verso of the item, supplied by the artist.) On the verso of the mount card is a hand-written mesage from the artist stressing that the window is intended for the West wall, not the East. Inscriptions: Recto - bottom left - Rondel window.
