Description: Comprises holograph diary kept by P Davy on the `Ruahine' and during his tour of New Zealand. After disembarking at Wellington where he visited relatives he toured to other parts of New Zealand. He describes a gathering of Maori following the settlement of fishing rights on Lake Wairarapa, a visit to a freezing works at Belfast, gold mining on the West Coast and Rotorua where he visited a pa, saw geysers and bathed in the hot pools. His journal ends on the return journey to England when staying at Sydney. Also includes transcript of part of the diary (16 Nov 1895-3 Jan 1896). Source of title - Supplied Relationship complexity - Full transcript of diary at MS-Papers-4391 Davy and his Aunt Harriet boarded the `Ruahine' at Plymouth 16 Nov 1895 and disembarked 12 Jan 1896 at Wellington where they stayed with relatives. After travelling around New Zealand they left Auckland for Sydney, 18 Mar. The writer of the diary is presumed to be P Davy, a passenger on the `Ruahine'; he visited members of the Davy family while in Wellington. He was probably one of the Devonshire Davys, a nephew of George Boutflower Davy, an official of the Land Registration Court of NZ, and the son of Edward Davy (1806-1885), an experimental chemist who emigrated to Australia. Includes sketch maps detailing his travels in Australia and an undated photograph of farm labourers. Description: Bennett desribes his experiences travelling and surveying in Ireland (1838-1840); his voyage on the `Lady Clarke' to Sydney and his brief stay there (1841) and the voyage to NZ in 1842. He gives his impressions of Kororareka and Russell (Okiato) including a lengthy discussion of Hone Heke's actions in Kororareka and writes further of his residence in Auckland and Wellington. Volume also has an appendix (50 page Maori word list) Bennett was with the Royal Engineers. In 1844 he was in Kerikeri but after being ill for some months, died in 1845. Description: Journal kept by Hunter while travelling from England to New Zealand on the `Rangitata' and his return to England on the `Makura' to Australia and the Orsova' from Sydney from 23 Oct 1931 to 26 Apr 1932. He travelled with Ena Hunter. He describes their preparations, embarkation at Southampton, the other passengers, food (including menus), sea sickness, entertainments, the comforts and otherwise of the ship, his cabin, their passage through the Panama Canal and Armstice Day. They disembarked at Wellington 24 Nov 1931, and left for Australia on the `Makura' 7 Mar 1932, and for England on the `Orsova' from Sydney, 13 Mar 1932. In New Zealand Hunter spent time in Wellington, visiting the Alexander Turnbull Library, describing the work of the League of Nations Union in Wellington, visits Christchurch, the West Coast and Nelson where he spent some time, Wanganui, the Waitomo Caves, Rotorua and Auckland and back through Taranaki where he climbed Mt Egmont; he visited farms and factories, observed the opening of Parliament (24 Feb 1932) and visited the Gear Freezing and Meat Preservation Company. He attended many church services in various churches including the Congregational, Church of Christ and Presbyterian churches. Folowing his and Ena's departure for Sydney he describes the new Sydney harbour bridge, their visit to Tasmania and the House of Commons in Hobart, visiting to Melbourne, Adelaide, Perth, Colombo, the Suez Canal, Naples and Gibraltar, and an ANZAC commemoration service he declined to attend. The journal is illustrated and includes a water colour of the `Rangitata', newspaper clippings of portraits of various New Zealanders; and a copy of a letter from the Turnbull to the donor (1986). Description: The autobiography, in two books, finishes in 1938, although an outline for a proposed third book to 1951 is included. Source of title - Transcribed title Cunningham gained extensive practical experience in sheep farming, fruit growing and forestry in New Zealand and Australia before serving with NZEF at Gallipoli in World War I. He joined the Department of Agriculture as an orchard instructor in 1917 and studied at Victoria University College in the 1920s. He represented New Zealand at the First Imperial Mycological Conference in London in 1924 and in 1928 was put in charge of the Mycological Laboratory, Plant Research Station, Palmerston North. He visited North American and British institutions in 1929 and was instrumental in the reorganization of agricultural research when, in 1936, plant research was transferred to the DSIR. Log of the proceedings of HMS Havannah

Description: Comprises the log of HMS `Havannah' under Capt J E Erskine in which is recorded weather, the position of the ship, the wind, sailing direction, sails set, activities at certain times of the day and other aspects of shipboard life, especially maintenance. The voyage began in Sheerness via Lisbon, Madeira, Trinidad, Cape of Good Hope, St Paul's Island, Cape Otway, Australia (Farm Cove) to New Zealand, passing Three Kings Island to Auckland and sailing via Cape Runaway to Port Nicholson. From there the log records sailing for Sydney, Ports Phillip and Arthur, Hobart Town, often returning to ports already visited, back to NZ (Auckland, Bay of Islands), Savage Island, Samoa, Tonga and other locations not noted. The ship returned to both Australia and New Zealand again, and spent long periods at Farm Cove towards the end of the expedition. Source of title - Transcribed Further journals on board the `Havannah' were kept by Vigors (at qMS-2081 (original), qMS-2082-2084 (transcribed) and MS-Copy-Micro-0060); and by Henry Gabriel Swainson at MS-2096-2097, which also has his letters to his sister, and (MS-Copy-Micro-0172) The log has been recorded by several people, one of whom is thought to be a midshipman or crew member whose occupations included rigging marks, mats, washing clothes, painting the ship's side, mending sails and holding divine service. Description: Original letters and transcripts from Petingale, mainly to his family in England. They are written from Sydney, Auckland and London, and describe his voyage to Australia, first impressions of Hobart, Sydney and Auckland, as well as his employment as a farmer, and the landscape and economic conditions of both countries. Petingale arrived in Sydney via Hobart in 1833 and worked as a superintendant of a farm owned by Captain John Coghill, 35 miles from Sydney. In 1847 he moved to New Zealand where he owned a farm outside Auckland. In 1845 and 1860 he revisited London. Quantity: 1 microfilm reel(s) positive (2 metres).
